Ada Virginia Hackett Carey was born July 12, 1928, to the late Dorsey Wright and Laura Hackett. She was raised by her grandmother, Lettie Hackett, and lived in the “Neck” her entire life. She attended the Erica School and spoke often of how she and her classmates walked to school. She graduated from AT Johnson in 1946. At an early age, she professed her faith in Jesus Christ and joined Salem Baptist Church and was a member until her passing.
Ada was united in holy matrimony to James Henry Carey (Jim) in 1946. Growing up as an only child, she decided early in life that she would have a large family. This union was blessed with eight children.
Ada was a dedicated worker. She worked for several companies in the Northern Neck during her career. She was employed at Levi’s, Daiger Seafood, Montross Library, Department of Social Services, Montross Elementary, and the Senior Citizens Program of Warsaw. She maintained her health and stamina after retirement by caring for and assisting the elderly. You could find her for many years providing transportation to appointments and grocery stores.
After losing her patient and friend in 2007, at the age of 79, she decided she would come home. She believed that love was truly an action word and what really counted in life was what you did outside of the church.
Ada was a sharp dresser and enjoyed shopping. You would always see her in outfits matching from head to toe. She would never leave home without a matching hat and fully believed a ladies head should be covered
A few days before transitioning on Tuesday, February 8, 2022, she said, “The Lord will take care of it.”
Her beautiful life will forever be cherished in the lives of her children: Marcus Carey (Joyce), of Sanderson, VA; Yolanda Carey of Capital Heights, MD, Reba Jones (Frank) of Montross, VA, Kim Carey of Colonial Beach, VA and Sheila Carey of Washington, DC. Ada was preceded in death by her sons James Carey, Wayne Carey (Patricia), and daughter Cheryl Carey.
Ada also leaves to cherish her memory a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.
“There are friends, there are family and then
there are friends who become family.”
Ada leaves to cherish a wonderful extended family, “Son” Wayne Dixon of Clinton, MD; her “little boy” Pastor Lorenza Tate and “little girl”, Delores Braxton of Tappahannock, Va.; William (Mutt) Dixon and Warren (Bear) Mahoney
