Mrs. Alice Self Saunders, went home to be with her Lord, on Saturday, April 3, 2021 at Riverside Hospital at the age of 79. She accepted Christ as her Savior at an early age at Grant’s Hill Baptist Church where she remained a member until her death.
Alice was born in Westmoreland County and attended the Westmoreland County Public Schools. As a passionate lifelong learner, she earned her GED and certification as a pharmacy technician in her later years of life. She retired after more than 30 years of service as a Manager in the Food Service Department of Westmoreland County Public Schools.
God blessed Alice with many talents that she used to glorify His name. She served as a pianist for her first church as a teenager. For more than 60 years she served as director of choirs and an accomplished pianist for many churches in the Northern Neck. Her beautiful voice was often the lead singer for many songs she played. She served as director for Grant’s Hill Baptist Church prior to the pandemic. She also serviced for many years as Church Treasurer for Grant’s Hill.
Alice enjoyed sewing and produced most of her clothing as well as assisting others in alterations. She was always willing to lend a helping hand and share her talents.
Alice was preceded in death by her husband Deacon Edward Saunders, son Keith Clayton, mother Alice Davis, father Raymond Self, and step-father Joseph Davis. She was also preceded in death by her brother John Self, sisters Ida Louise Byrd, and Deborah Gray.
She leaves precious memories with sons, Anthony Clayton (Jackquline) of Vallejo, California, William Clayton (Danielle) of Hopkins, South Carolina, Lloyd Clayton (Linda) of Philadelphia, PA, and Dwight Clayton of Darby, PA; fourteen grandchildren; twenty-one great grand-children; and two great, great grandchildren.
Also cherishing her memories are two brothers, Raymond Self (Lucille) of Mesquite, TX, Lloyd Self of Odenton, MD, one sister Georgia Phillips (Eldridge) of Petersburg, VA., brothers-in-law, Lewis Saunders (Rachel) of Columbia, MD,
Milton Byrd of Colonial Beach, VA, James Gray of Junction City, KS and sister-in law Thelma Saunders of Colonial Beach, VA; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Graveside services for Alice Saunders of Montross, Virginia and Retired Food Service Worker, for Westmoreland County Public Schools, will be held on Monday, April 12, 2021 at 11AM at the Grant's Hill Baptist Church Cemetery, Grant's Hill Church Road, Montross, Virginia.

Remains may be viewed on Sunday, April 11, 2021 from 4PM until 6PM and on Monday, April 12, 2021 from 930AM until 1030 AM in the chapel of the WELDON-FISHER FUNERAL HOME.
