Austin Burrell Obituary

On Monday, January 6th, God extended his hand of love and gently took Austin Burrell home. Up until that day, he was still full of life and talked about football, especially his favorite team- The Commanders.

Austin was born on October 9, 1954, to the late John Joshua Burrell and Susie Burrell of Westmoreland County. He received his education from the Westmoreland County Public Schools in Westmoreland County, Virginia.

Austin accepted Christ as his personal savior at an early age, he was baptized and became a member of Jerusalem Baptist Church in Oldhams, Virginia.

Austin was employed at Blanfield in Essex County, VA for over 20 years until he retired in 2021.

On May 24th, 2014, he was joined in holy matrimony to his loving wife, Thelma E. Burrell.

Austin’s genuine and loving smile is what we all miss the most. He always looked forward to family gatherings including all the Oldies but Goodies played on the big speakers. Austin shared a very special bond with all his family and got excited each time he saw or talked to them.

Austin was preceded in death by his parents John and Susie Burrell; a sister, Mary Burrell (Mamie); four brothers: Melvin (Smiley), Eddie, Tommy, and Howard (Bine) Burrell.

Austin leaves to cherish fond memories with his loving wife, Thelma; daughter, Stephanie Morrison (Chesterfield, VA); stepson, James Crawley (Warsaw, VA); grandson, Kai Roper (Chesterfield, VA); three sisters: Louise Thompson (Hague, VA), Rosie Burrell (Montross, VA), and Susie Burrell (Red Bank, NJ); sister-in law, Carolyn Burrell (Melvin), one brother, John Burrell Jr. (Evangelist Sallie) (Oldhams, VA); seven sisters-in-law and two brothers-in-law; three special friends: Calvin “Crunch” Payne, Otis Fortune, and Lawrence “Lonnie” Dean; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.

A Funeral Service for Austin Burrell will be held on Saturday, January 18 at 12 Noon in the sanctuary of the Jerusalem Baptist Church, Hague, Virginia.

Interment will follow in the Jerusalem Baptist Church Cemetery.
