Avis Henderson Dixon, affectionately known as “Mama D” or “Ms. Avis” peacefully went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, April 25, 2026. She was born on October 21, 1946, to the late Luther A. Henderson and Ruth R. Henderson of Zacata, Virginia.
Avis attended the Westmoreland County Public Schools, where she graduated with honors as Salutatorian in 1964 from A.T. Johnson High School, Templeman’s, VA. A loyal member of Salem Baptist Church, Avis served with humility, kindness and love. She accepted Christ at an early age and joined Siloam Baptist Church. In addition, she was a devoted supporter of Abundant Life Christian Ministries.
On December 26, 1970, Avis united in holy matrimony to Walter Elwood Dixon to this long-standing union of 53 years, three children were born: Aletha, Anissa, and Tierra.
Following high school, Avis furthered her education, where she obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education at Coppin State University, Baltimore, MD.
The Teacher… The Esteemed Leader
As she began her professional journey in Elementary Education, Avis taught within the Westmoreland County School Systems where she nurtured her students for many years through retirement.
After retirement, Ms. Avis continued her passion for caring and nurturing children by becoming a licensed daycare provider from her home, “Rainbow Day Care.” As a devoted teacher, and care giver, she impacted the lives of countless children and families through her patience, kindness and generous spirit. Her dedication to helping children learn and grow became one of the many lasting legacies of her life. Special recognition to Ms. Katina Smith, Teacher Assistant.
Care Taker…
Of Avis’ many talents, she obtained a Nursing Certificate where she became a home health care nurse continuing on her path to nurture others. Her final assignment was caretaker for her better half, Walter.
The Fruit Bearer… “Giver”
Ms. Avis' home was filled with love, laughter, prayer, and encouragement. Her passion for service and personal relationships permeated the community, a rare gem, a skill that she perfected--the Sunday School Teacher, choir member and family friend.
Her favorite past times were playing the piano, tending to house plants, putting together 300-piece puzzles, faith-based reading, listening to gospel music, telling jokes, and fellowshipping with her husband on the front porch. The many purchased swing sets brought laughter and happiness to generations of children, creating treasured memories that will live on for years to come.
