Bertha Lee Johnson was born June 10, 1951, in Hague, VA to Russell Lewis and Deaconess Hilda Lewis. She accepted Christ at an early age and joined Potomac Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. A. B. Smith. Bertha served Potomac BC until her health failed. She served on the Youth Choir, Senior Choir, Gospel Traveleers Choir, Ushers Ministry, and Sunday School. She also served as a Trustee and the Church Clerk. She was a member of the Women of Grace of Potomac BC and continued via conference calling with Bible Study every Wednesday night and the Prayer line every Thursday night until her demise. Bertha also served as Den Mother with the Cub Scout Pack 270 in Kinsale, VA.
Bertha was educated with the Westmoreland Public School system. She began her working career with the Levi Strauss Co. in Warsaw, VA and The Elastic Plant in Tappahannock, VA. Bertha worked 37 years with Mattatuck Mfg. in Montross, VA where she became the Quality Control Supervisor. When Mattatuck closed, she went into the health field where she worked at The Westmoreland Rehabilitation Center in Colonial Beach, VA., and became a caregiver. Bertha later went to work in the Westmoreland County School District where she became a Food Supervisor. She loved working at the school and being around the children, so much that she retired and went back.
Bertha parted this life at her childhood home on June 4, 2026 with her sister Deacon Sandra Lewis at her side rubbing her arms.
Bertha was joined in holy matrimony to the late James A. Johnson, Sr. To this union, four children were born, Maggie, James, Charles, and Brian. On April 18, 1988, she was joined in holy matrimony to the late Linwood Johnson.
Bertha was preceded in death by her parents, Russell & Hilda Lewis; James Johnson; her late husband, Linwood O. Johnson; one son, Brian Johnson; one godson, Timothy Lewis; one sister, Mary Carey; four brothers: Joe, Charles, James, and Rev. Randolph Lewis; one granddaughter, Tamara Reynolds; two nieces, Cassandra & Tonika Lewis; six nephews: Willis Fulcher, John & Kervin Carey, Raymond D, Jr., & Raymond E. (Butch) Lewis; one sister-in-law, Juanita Lewis; one brother-in-law, John L. Carey; and bonus daughter, Elise Payne Pepper.
Bertha leaves to cherish her memories, daughter, Maggie Holmes (Bruce) Supply, VA; two sons, James A. Johnson, Jr. (Rachelle) Richmond, VA and Charles Johnson, Burgess; two godsons, Tyrone Lewis, Lanham, MD and Jonathan Lewis, Hague, VA; two goddaughters, Debbie & LaToya Rose, both Woodbridge, VA; brother, Raymond Lewis, Woodbine, NJ; two sisters, Ann Rose, Woodbridge, VA and Sandra Lewis, Hague VA; bonus children, Brenda Johnson, Morningside, MD, Susie Travis, Clinton, MD, and Linwood Johnson, Jr., Fredericksburg, VA; sister-in-law, Dea. Shirley Lewis; fourteen grandchildren: Terriel Johnson, Brian Williams, Jameka Johnson, Isiah Holmes, Charles Johnson, Jr., Johnathon & Damiya Pleasant, Kemani & Jamel Johnson, Armon Tamoz May and Trenton Gaskins, Karolyn, Kaya & Keyiona Veney; seven bonus grandchildren: Tyler Ashton, Kervin Wong, Kenton Hackett, Jaiven, Alena, Blair & Joshua Lewis; many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends; one special cousin, Jacquelyn Campbell, who was her caregiver. She would smile when Jacquelin, her friends, and co-workers in the school system visited her.; two bonus grands, Angela Chapman (Glenn) and Clarissa Mason (Ernest) and five grandsons: Omar Rashaund Johnson (Brandi) Effren Johnson (Rachael), Jan Johnson, Calvin Payne, Jr. (Bernita) & Stacey Payne (Karen).
