Betty Clayton Obituary

Betty Brown Clayton was called home peacefully to be with the Lord, surrounded by her family on Sunday afternoon, December 11, 2022. Betty Lee (affectionately known by many), was born September 17, 1928 to the late Thomas Johnson, Sr. and the late Corine Rich. She was the oldest of ten children.

Betty Lee attended Salem School, Mount Holly, VA. She joined Salem Baptist Church and accepted Christ as her personal Lord and Savior at an early age.

Betty Lee was united in marriage to the late Alex Moses Brown, Sr. in 1947, until his death in 1965. To this union nine children were born. In 1987, she married the late Fred McDaniel Clayton.  They were united in marriage, until his death in 2015.

Betty Lee was the Matriarch of the family and to so many that called her Mom and Grandmom.  She loved everyone and everyone loved her.  She was a great mother and homemaker, who loved her family dearly.  She loved to cook and did not mind feeding anyone. She liked the Redskins (Commanders), but she loved her soap operas, the Price is Right, Love Thy Neighbor, and Meet the Browns.

She worked at the Tomato Factory for a few years and was later employed at Robberecht Seafood in Montross, VA for thirty plus years, until she retired.

She is preceded in death by her husbands, (Alex Brown, Sr. and Fred Clayton); daughters, Mary (Kaye) and Mildred (Aggie); son, Wyatt; granddaughters, Angela and Sharonda; brothers, Thomas Jr., Robert, John and Joseph; and sisters, Lucy and Rosette.

She leaves to cherish her precious memory: her loving and devoted children,  three daughters, Earlene Wiggins (Willie), Mount Holly, VA, Priscilla Conley (Carlton), Stafford, VA, Faye Brown, Mount Holly, VA; three sons, Charles Brown, Sr. (Joyce), Mount Holly, VA, Alex Brown, Jr. (Hazel), Kinsale, VA, and William Brown, Montross, VA; two sisters, Mary Rousey, Washington, DC and Shirley Rich (Abraham), Hague, VA; one brother, Sam Dean (Marcella), Warsaw, VA; sixteen sisters-in-law; four brothers-in-law; eighteen grandchildren; twenty-six great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

She also leaves to cherish her memory, two special people, Mary (Fran) Brown and Daniel (Pete) Hall.

Betty Brown Clayton departed this life on Sunday, December 11 at her home.
