Betty Elizabeth McCoy Obituary

Betty Elizabeth Stewart McCoy was born January 4, 1928, in Ambler, Pennsylvania to the late Mabel Dowling Hewlett and Walter Dennis Stewart. She departed from this life to eternal rest on March 22, 2022.

She moved to Virginia to be raised by her Aunt Gerta “Gertie”. After Aunt Gerta passed, she went to stay with her Aunt Narcissus Lee, better known as Mam Mam. Betty’s adoptive brothers, Harry “Dink”, John D., and Edgar “Bud”, and adoptive sisters Hattie, Tayloe, and Lillian all predeceased her; as well as her biological sister Bertha Burnett.

Betty completed her education in the Westmoreland County school system, from the one-room Hacketts Hill Primary to the A. T. Johnson High School, graduating in 1947.

Betty married George Washington McCoy and relocated to Northumberland County. George passed away in 2000, after 53 years of marriage. The union blessed them with four children – George “Mac” and Glenwood predeceased her. Betty moved her church membership from Potomac to Lively Hope to be with her children. It was during these years that she became active in numerous ministries, including the Senior Choir, Missionary, Willing Workers, Progressive Club, Pastors Aid, Kitchen Committee and Church Clerk.

Betty was a housewife until her children were in school, and then she began her 30-year career as lunchroom manager with the Northumberland County School System. During that time, she adopted hundreds of children that, to this day, call her Mom Betty, Ms Betty or Ms B. It was hard to take her anywhere without someone reminding her that she fed them and/or their children.

She loved to give her time and energy to the church, until the responsibilities became too much for her. She also loved gardening, cooking, catching up with loved ones on the phone, and Seek-A-Word puzzles. Having never driven herself, she was a willing and capable co-pilot.

She had a huge heart and larger-than-life personality. She filled the room with her presence and made friends anywhere she went. To know her was to love her, and she loved back just as hard.
Betty leaves to cherish her memory her daughter, Cynethia; son, Frank; daughter-in-law, Judith; grandchildren, Darran, Javier, Miguel, Renee and Rico; nephews, Thomas “Sonny” (Charlotte), Robert “Blue”; nieces, Cherry, Barbara Lowe, Bernice Reaner, Rose Mary, Peggy, and Barbara; great-grandchildren, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, a host of friends and adoptive family.

A Service of Remembrance for Betty McCoy who departed this life on Tuesday, March 22, 2022, in Clinton, Maryland, will be held on Thursday, March 31, 2022, at 12 Noon in the sanctuary of the Lively Hope Baptist Church, 1550 Lively Hope Road, Callao, Virginia.
