Booker Thomas Washington was born on May 28, 1944 to the late Harding and Ada Washington of Lottsburg, Va. “Booker T.” as he was affectionately called attended school in Northumberland County.
He was baptized at an early age and assisted with construction of the steeple of Zion Lottsburg Church.
In 1967, Booker T. Washington married Ann Louise Newman of Kinsale, Va. From this union, one child was born: Crystal Hickman of Lottsburg, Va. He enjoyed playing cards, watching races & boxing, and buying sports cars back in the day. Three of his favorite cars were a 1958 Chevy, a 1970 Grand Prix, and a 1972 Chevelle.
On July 1, 1969, Booker was inducted in the U.S. Army to serve in the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged on December 30, 1970. Booker T. worked several jobs throughout his lifetime. He worked as an oyster shucker, crab picker, and on fish boats. His final position was with the NSWC (Naval Surface and Weapons Center) in Dahlgren, Virginia. Booker T. worked there as a Tractor Operator/Laborer for the Public Works Department of the Maintenance and Utilities Division. He retired in September 2008 after 24 years of service.
Booker was preceded in death by his parents, Harding and Ada Washington; a brother, Harding Washington, Jr.; father and mother-in-law; Robert Newman, Sr, and Frances Newman; a brother-in-law, Robert Newman; and a bonus grandson, Shane Hickman.
Booker T. Washington leaves to cherish his memory a devoted wife, Ann Washington; a loving daughter, Crystal Hickman; a caring son-in-law, David Hickman, Jr.; and a grandson, Malik Hickman whom Booker T. adored and loved being a “Pop-Pop”. He leaves three sisters-in-law: Joan Harris of Kinsale, Va, Princess Wise of Tappahannock, Va, and Regina Page Brayboy of Suffolk, Va; two brothers-in-law, Robert “Squeaky” Wise of Tappahannock, Va. and Samuel Brayboy, of Suffolk, Va.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
A Funeral Service for Booker T. Washington will be held on Friday, May 31 at 12 Noon in the chapel of the WELDON-FISHER FUNERAL HOME.
Interment will follow in the Zion Church at Lottsburg Cemetery.
Remains may be viewed from 4PM until 6PM on Thursday, May 30 and Friday, May 31 from 11AM until service time at the funeral home.
