Carlton Wendell Henry, affectionately known as “Charlie” was born on September 16, 1960 in Westmoreland County, Virginia. He was the eldest of five children born to Gladys Jones Henry and the late Moses “Tootie” Henry, Jr. On Thursday, December 5, 2024, “Charlie” peacefully slipped into the arms of his Savior, Jesus Christ.
At an early age, Charlie accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior, joining Zion Baptist Church in Kinsale, Virginia under the leadership of the late Reverend Waverly E. Taylor, and later serving under Bishop Donn R. Hall. In recent years, Charlie rededicated his life to the Lord, faithfully attending service every Sunday morning. He was oftentimes led by the Holy Spirit to the altar for prayer, strengthening his relationship with God.
As a young child, Charlie faced health challenges due to a heart condition. His parents showered him with extra care and attention, leading some to refer to him as the “favorite child.” Despite his health struggles, Charlie grew up with a strong spirit and a very special bond with his family.
Charlie received his education in the Westmoreland County Public School system. Shortly after graduating, he moved to Baltimore, Maryland to be with his childhood sweetheart, Robin Mae O’Carroll.
Charlie and Robin married on August 15, 1987 and later relocated back to Virginia. Their union was blessed with two sons, Dondre and Devontae, who were the pride and joy of their lives. Following Robin’s unforeseen passing just over a year ago, Charlie had been of great support to their sons, providing strength and guidance during a difficult time.
Charlie was employed by ServiceMaster of Baltimore for several years. After relocating back to Virginia, Charlie worked at Walmart in Tappahannock, Virginia, for over 20 years. His infectious smile, kind demeanor, and warm spirit touched many lives, leaving a lasting impression on each of his coworkers.
Charlie was a man of simple joys. He loved family gatherings and meeting up with the guys for the Friday morning “Breakfast Club.” He enjoyed cheering on his favorite football team, the Washington Commanders. He was also passionate about car racing and had traveled as far as Las Vegas to attend a race. Charlie’s life was full of love, laughter, and treasured moments, and he will truly be missed by all who knew him.
Charlie was preceded in death by his father Moses “Tootie” Henry, Jr. and his beloved wife, Robin Mae Henry.
Charlie leaves to cherish his memory two sons: Dondre Henry and Devontae Henry of Tappahannock, VA; mother, Gladys Marie Henry of Tappahannock, VA; mother-in-law, Lillian O’Carroll of Baltimore, MD; two sisters: Burnestine Henry-Brooks (John) of Tappahannock, VA and Pamela Wood (Russell) of Tappahannock, VA; two brothers: Michael Henry (Jennifer) of Tappahannock, VA and James Henry (Carla) of Warsaw, VA; two sisters-in-law: Vanessa O’Carroll of Tappahannock, VA and Myoshi Jackson (Donnell) of Baltimore, MD; one brother-in-law Donald O’Carroll of Baltimore, MD; four aunts: Barbara Garner of Waldorf, MD, Shirley Jones of Hague, VA, Eliza Jane Henry of Hague, VA and Verna Jones of Red Bank, NJ; three uncles Richard Jones (Thelma) of Sandy Point, VA, Jerry Henry (Cheryl) of Callao, VA and Thomas Ball of Hague, VA; bonus mom, Rosemary Wilson; special friends: Larry Smith, Vincent Burrell, Matthew Slater, Harvey Wilson, Sr.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
