On March 29, 2021 about the hour of 7:00 p.m., God in His infinite wisdom dispatched an angel to the Hanover Health and Rehabilitation Center in Hanover, VA to gently close the eyes of our dearly beloved Catherine Tate Johnson, daughter of the late Hansford Tate, Sr. and Bessie Richardson Tate.
Catherine was born August 16, 1917 in Westmoreland County. She attended the public schools of the county, and later as a school bus driver, cook, and cafeteria manager at A.T. Johnson High and Junior High School.
While serving in the capacity, she supported and represented the school in numerous ways while attending educational sessions at Virginia State College, now University, in Petersburg, VA and at Virginia Polytechnic Institute in Blacksburg, VA.
On November 18, 1939 she was united in Holy matrimony to the late Deacon Ralph Wilson Johnson, who preceded her in death on April 18, 1999. Those nearly sixty years of love, devotion, and happiness were treasures blessed by God.
Her Christian service began at age sixteen when she became a member of Siloam Baptist Church. It was there that she acknowledged Jesus Christ and was baptized. In dedication to God, she used the gifts that He gave her to further His work here on earth. She served her church in numerous capacities as Chairperson of the Missionary Ministry, Chairperson of the Ushers Board, and the Flower Committee. In addition to many other services rendered, she was a member of the Eastern Star.
On May 10, 2009, Catherine transferred her church membership from Siloam Baptist Church to Galilee Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Joseph Haden, Sr. She was set aside as Mother of the Church and served as a Deaconess.
In her leisure time she enjoyed crocheting, preparing special menus, cooking, and participating in community activities. Spending quality time with her family and friends was most important to her.
She leaves to cherish her fond memories two wonderful sons, William Larry Johnson Sr. (Betty) of Camp Springs, MD, and Reginald Elwood Johnson (Gail) of Kinsale, VA.
She was over excited to have five grandchildren, William L. Johnson, Jr. (Kariema) of Baltimore, MD, Kevin J. Johnson (Charon) of Columbia, MD, Lashell M. Johnson (Ali) of Alexandria, VA, Stephon A. Norris, Sr. of Honeybrook, PA, and Aaron B. Norris, Sr. of Downingtown, PA; fourteen great-grandchildren; godson, Carl Johnson (Isabelle) of Montross, VA; a special friend, Sheleta Jackson; and a multitude of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
Service of Remembrance for Catherine Johnson will be held on Friday, April 9, 2021 at 12 Noon at Zion Baptist Church, 1274 Zion Church Road, Kinsale, Virginia
Interment will be in the Zion Baptist Church Cemetery.
Remains may be viewed from 10AM until service time on Friday, April 9, 2021 in Zion Baptist Church.
