Charlene Ashton Obituary

On Friday, April 17, 2026, after a lengthy illness, Charlene gave up her earthly home to receive her heavenly home; she was surrounded by her family. Charlene was the 12th child born to the late Jerry and Elizabeth Ashton.

Charlene B. Ashton was born August 11, 1962, to the late Thornton Jerry and Maria Elizabeth Ashton in Westmoreland County. Charlene was proceeded in death by her brothers: Stanley Hill, William Ashton, Roderick Ashton, and Lloyd Ashton; and her sisters, Helen Lane and Shirley Veney.

Charlene received her education in the Westmoreland County school system and graduated from Washinton and Lee High School.

Charlene accepted Christ at an early age and became a member of Jerusalem Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend Henry C. Lee. Charlene later joined Salem Baptist Church where she was a Missionary worker. Charlene always loved giving back; she always found the time to work as an EMT under the leadership of Ferman Dixon and donated to numerous charities.

During the Summers of her high school years Charlene worked on Dahlgreen Navy Base and continued for numerous years after graduating high school. Charlene eventually left the Navy base and went to work for VDOT. When leaving there she went to work at Haynesville Correctional Center, but that was not enough for Charlene, she needed to keep busy, so she took a part time job with Walmart. She put her heart into everything she did and was promoted to Manager at Walmart, and she eventually left Haynesville altogether.

Throughout Charlene’s career she met many people and some would go on to become lifelong friends. One thing about Charlene and two for sure she loved her boys and her granddaughters with everything in her and even as her health failed, Charlene would smile at the sound of their voices and even land a left hook-on occasion. Just ask her granddaughter, Shay.

Left to cherish Charlene’s memory are three sons: Christopher Ashton, Deante Ashton, and Devon Landers; four granddaughters: Gabrial Ashton, Keimoni Lowe, Ja’vonah Landers, and Ja’tari Landers; one great-granddaughter, Naiture Parker; four sisters: Thelma Burton (John), Laura Brown (Ulysses), Lola Ashton, and Patricia McDowney (Kenneth); numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, great great nieces and nephews, cousins, family and friends; special friends: Brenda Bibbens, Lisa Allen, Jeffery Kelly, and the class of 1980.
