Daniel Lewis Jones, affectionately known as “Gunsmoke” the eldest son of the late Henry and Josephine Jones was born on February 27, 1930 in Westmoreland County, Virginia. God saw fit to call him home on the early morning of December 25, Christmas Day, at his residence.
Daniel loved the lord and at an early age confessed his faith in God and joined Little Zion. He spent several years active in the church in the usher’s ministry.
Being the oldest sibling, he was very instrumental in providing support around the farm for the family. He always looked forward to working with his father, brothers and friends in the fall harvesting of the hogs. He also enjoyed deer hunting with his Round Hill Hunt Club members and fishing on the boat with his sons, his brother “Marvin” and his uncle “Arthur”.
Daniel had a passion throughout life for driving ….especially trucks. He started his career working at the “Ingleside Nursery” where he seized the opportunity to drive trucks for the nursery. From there, he went on to work for “Dorsey Edwards Grainery” where he exclusively drove tractor trailers. This passion along with his experience eventually landed him a civil service position at the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Dahlgren Virginia where he worked in the Transportation Division up until the time of his retirement. He made several trips across the country to California and other locations during his career.
He leaves to cherish his memories; a devoted wife, Agnes; five sons, Charles Jones (Louise), Raymond Jones (Annie), George Jackson (Sonia), Joseph Jackson Sr. (Donna), Kevin Jackson (Karen); three daughters, Carleen James (Douglas), Ella Plowden, Robyn Cobb; daughter-in-law, Annette Jones; son-in-law, Harold Waddy; aunt, Alberta Byrd; four brothers, Marvin Jones (Ella), Raymond E. Jones Sr. (Sue), Moses Jones, Joseph Jones (Sarah); three sisters, Thelma Saunders, Rosa Marie Byrd (Thomas) and Victoria Cox; a host of grandchildren (as he always called his little darlings); nieces; nephews; and lifelong friends including one special couple, Albert & Patricia Henry.
Five children preceded him in death, Davie Jones, Dennis Jones, Cora Jackson, Stephanie Jackson, and Janet Waddy
