Deacon Charles "Charlie" Hopewell Obituary

Charles Sheridan Hopewell of Colonial Beach, Virginia, was born on May 29, 1928. He was the son of Deacon Thomas S. Hopewell and Deaconess Gladys M. Hopewell. He departed this life on May 3, 2024, at the age of 95.

Charles was educated in the Westmoreland County School System. He accepted Christ at an early age and became a member of Macedonia Baptist Church in Colonial Beach, Virginia. Charles loved his church. He served on the Deacon Board for several years. His passion was singing. He sang with the Macedonia Men’s Choir and several other church groups, singing at churches all around the area. His favorite hymn was “Hold on to God’s Unchanging Hands”.

Charles married Catherine Hicks and after her death, he married Hazel Turner.

When he was young, Charles moved to Washington, DC. He retired from Washington Gas Company and moved back to Colonial Beach. He started his 2nd career with PEPCO and retired from there. He also drove a school bus for Westmoreland County and drove a limo for Weldon-Fisher Funeral Home.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents, Deacon Thomas S. Hopewell and Deaconess Gladys M. Hopewell; three sisters: Ruby L. Lucas, Gladys M. Shelton, and Linda H. Brooks; two brothers, Rev. Thomas W. Hopewell and Robert Janon Hopewell; and his wives, Catherine and Hazel Hopewell.

He leaves to cherish his memory two sisters, V. Nileene Newman of Mt. Holly, VA and Waverly T. Beverly of Kinston, NC; five sisters-in-law: Lillian C. Hopewll of Colonial Beach, VA, Maxine Smith of King George, VA, Jean Wilkerson of Washington, DC, Laverne Turner of Colonial Beach, VA, Barbara Dejesus of Laplata, MD, and Betty Freye of King George, VA; step-son, Rev. Kerry Richards; six step-children: Brenda Turner of Colonial Beach, VA, Linda Turner Baker of King George, VA, Lorraine Richards, Patricia Turner, Earl Turner all of Colonial Beach, Robert Tuner (Shern) of Philadelphia, PA; aunt, Evelyn McDowney; special nephew, John Dixon of Mt. Holly, VA; special nephew, Wendell Hopewell; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Brenda was more than a stepdaughter to Charles, she was his caregiver and his CNA. She cared for him in her home for more than 5 years. She and her daughter, Kyia treated him like he was their Dad. To Kyia, he was her Papa.
Charles was a very stylish man. He wouldn’t go to the store until he wiped his shoes off or his car was shining and Brenda kept him like that until the end.

A Home going Service for Deacon Charles "Charlie" S. Hopewell of Colonial Beach, Virginia will be held on Wednesday, May 15 at 12 Noon in the sanctuary of the Macedonia Baptist Church, 1081 Macedonia Lane, Colonial Beach, Virginia.

Interment will follow in the Hopewell Family Cemetery, Colonial Beach, Virginia.

Remains may be viewed from 11AM until service time on Wednesday, May 15 at Macedonia Baptist Church.
