Deacon Granville Fisher, Jr. Obituary

Granville Edison Fisher, Jr. the patriarch of both the Fisher and Weldon Families transitioned peacefully from labor to reward on June 05, 2023,  at the Northern Neck Health Care Facility.

Granville, the son of the late Granville E. Fisher, Sr and the late Bettie Weldon Fisher, was born in Baltimore, Maryland on November 19, 1927. His early education began at the Kremlin School, which was a one room school in the community. He graduated from A. T. Johnson High School in 1944.  After high school he attended Virginia State College (University) until 1946 when he was inducted in the United States Army. During World War II, he served in the Quartermaster’s office during the Occupation of Japan. He was Honorably Discharged from the Army in 1947. After the Army, Granville attended Echols Mortuary College in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. When he completed his studies, he returned home in 1950 to begin working at the family business, Weldon’s Funeral Home, which was started by his grandfather, George H. Weldon. In 1997, the funeral home name changed to Weldon-Fisher Funeral Home, where Granville continued to work with his son, Darryl, the fourth generation of Funeral Directors in the family. Granville worked tirelessly serving grieving families in the Northern Neck and beyond for more than 72 years.

In 1950, Granville married the love of his life, the late O. Bernice Roane Fisher.  At the time of her death, they had been married for 45 years. This union gave birth to four children: Gary Wayne, Cecelia Annette, Darryl Edwin and Wanda Michelle.

Granville joined and was baptized at Galilee Baptist Church at an early age. He was ordained as a deacon in 1957 and for 66 years he served faithfully and dutifully in that capacity. He gave his time and talents in other areas of the church such as singing in the senior choir and men’s chorus and serving as assistant clerk and as a member of the finance team. Deacon Fisher was also an active member of the Northern Neck Baptist Deacon’s Union, where he served as secretary for over 35 years, and was a member of the Northern Neck Baptist Association.

Deacon Fisher possessed a Christ-like attitude of stewardship, faith, humbleness, love and kindness. He lived a life of service as evident in the many civic and professional organizations in which he participated. He was a Charter Member of the Westmoreland County Rescue Squad, served on the Tri-County Medical Board, Central Virginia Health Services Board of Directors, the Westmoreland County Medical Center Advisory Council and the Westmoreland Equalization Board. He was a member of the A.T. Johnson Alumni Association, the Virginia State University Alumni Association, Northern Neck Convention Choir and a member of the Virginia Mortician Association and the Northern Neck Funeral Directors Association. Deacon Fisher was a Past Master Mason of the Prince Hall Masonic Lodge, Westmoreland 212. As the unofficial “mayor” of Oldhams, many days you could find Deacon Fisher walking along Nomini Hall Road picking up and bagging trash.

Deacon Fisher leaves four children to carry on his legacy: Mr. Gary W. Fisher, Sr. (Rita), Ms. Cecelia A. Robinson, Pastor Darryl E. Fisher (Pastor Carolyn), Dr. Wanda M. Fisher; sister, Mrs. Lola F. Graham; sister-in law, Mrs. Sandra Jones (Herman);  twelve grandchildren: Gary, Jr., Brian, Keona, April, Tenelle, Hope, Trudy, Deonte’, Charita, Lawanda, Andrea and Pamela; twenty-one great grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; two aunts-in-law, Mrs. Almeta Wood and Mrs. Pearlina Cockrell; beloved nephew, Derwin Weldon and many other nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Deacon Fisher’s favorite quote:
“There is a destiny that makes us brothers; none goes his way alone.
All that we send into the lives of others comes back into our own.”
Edwin Markham
