Deacon Thomas Byrd Obituary

Thomas Byrd was born to the late Frank and Otha Byrd on June 26, 1932, in Essex County, VA.  On Saturday, January 8, 2022, God extended his almighty hand of love, beckoned and whispered softly, “Come with Me” Thomas reached out and took His hand without fear and journeyed to the promise land.

Tom, as his family and friends affectionately called him, accepted Christ at an early age and joined the Grant’s Hill Baptist Church, Leedstown VA.  While at Grant‘s Hill in 1996, he was ordained as a Deacon under the leadership of Rev. Lloyd N. Fox.  He was also a Trustee, ushered and sang on the Combined Choir and the Men’s Chorus.  Desiring to attend church with his family, November 1, 2015, he transferred his membership to the Little Zion Baptist Church in Oak Grove VA.

On August 17, 1957, he was united in holy matrimony to Rosa Marie Jones.  From this union, six children were born. One daughter, Frances Marie Byrd-Freely, preceded him in death.

Tom was employed at the Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division, having retired in January 1994, after more than 25 years of service.

Tom was an original member and later became the President of the Round Hill Hunt Club.  He was an avid hunter and fisherman.

He was also known as “Speed-King”.

He was a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, great-great-grandfather.  He believed in the passage of scripture from Proverbs 22:6 which states “Train up a child in the way he should go:  and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”  This was evident because his children, their spouses, grandchildren and great-grandchildren all enjoyed and old time fellowship after Sunday Worship when they all gathered around the family table.  He loved being surrounded by his family.

He is survived by his loving family, his wife Rosa Marie; three sons, Thomas L (Patricia), Lewis (Sylvia) of Colonial Beach, VA, and George Sr. of Mechanicsville, VA; three daughters, Brenda Baker (Greg) of Richmond, VA, Grace White (Michael) of King George, and Susan Roane of Montross, VA; one brother, Milton Byrd of Colonial Beach, VA; one sister, Beatrice Berry (William) of Fort Washington, MD; four sisters-in-law, Alberta Byrd, Rose Byrd, Thelma Saunders, and Evelyn Cox all of Colonial Beach, VA; four brothers-in-law, Marvin Jones (Ella Mae), Moses Jones, both of Colonial Beach, VA, Raymond Jones (Sue) of Stafford, VA, Joseph Jones (Sarah) of King George, VA; 13 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; one special guy that he loved as his son, George Ball, III, of Colonial Beach, VA; and a host of nieces, nephews; cousins and friends too numerous to name.
