Deaconess Katie Jones Obituary

Deaconess and Trustee Katie Belle Williamson Jones earned her wings on Friday, 5 April 2024 at her home in Colonial Beach, Virginia.  She lived life abundantly for 82 years.  Deaconess Jones was born in Rock Hill, South Carolina on January 12, 1942.  She attended Rock Hill public schools, graduating from Emmett Scott High School in 1959.  Upon graduation from Emmett Scott High School in 1959, she attended Friendship Junior College in Rock Hill, South Carolina, graduating in 1962.  It was here that she found her plus one (+1) in this journey we call life, Arthur Jerry Jones Jr.  In the fall of 1962, she transferred to Claflin College. Katie Williamson graduated from Claflin University in the spring of 1965, with a Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education. She has always had an unwavering thirst for knowledge, she obtained her Master’s Degree in Reading from Old Dominion University, Norfolk, Virginia in 1989.


Deaconess Jones began her teaching career in Tryon, North Carolina at Cobb Elementary School teaching second and third grade for 2 years, while also serving as a librarian for 18 months. Prior to moving to Westmoreland County, Virginia, she married the love of her life, Arthur Jerry Jones, Jr. on Saturday, August 20, 1966.  Moved to Virginia on Monday, August 22, 1966 and started work on Wednesday, August 24, 1966.  They did not take a honeymoon.  She told her daughter that every day she spent with her beloved was her honeymoon.  Upon arriving in Virginia, she was employed at Washington District Elementary School as a Second-grade teacher, Reading Lab and Reading Specialist Teacher as well as spending almost 26 years as acting principal when needed.  She was appointed a Principal designee at Washington District Elementary School for the 1999-2000 school year.

Mrs. Jones retired from teaching in 2003 after 37 years.  Even after retirement, she continued to work in her community through a number of community associations including the Northern Neck Women’s Association, Northern Neck Baptist Association, Westmoreland County NAACP just to name a few.

Katie gave her life to the Lord at the tender age of 9 years old.  She was baptized by the late Reverend F.G. Lowry in Rock Hill, South Carolina.  Joining the New Zion Baptist Church.  After moving to Virginia, she and her late husband joined Grant’s Hill Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend Paul E. Carter in 1967.  There she served her Lord and Savior as well as the congregation in a host of roles and clubs in several different roles.  All of which she served proudly until her passing.

Katie was proceeded in death by her parents, Jerry Hunter, and Nancy McCree Williamson.  Her two (2) sisters Barbara Ann Johnson, and Bettye Jean McCroey.  Her bonus son, Jerry Darnell Means and the absolute love of her life, Arthur Jerry Jones, Jr.


Katie leaves to celebrate fond memories of her life well lived, her two (2) children, Fatima Carter (Renard) of Lexington Park, Maryland and Kesha Jones of Montross, Virginia; her two (2) bonus children, Annette Davis of Moore, South Carolina, and Bridgette Jones of Welford, South Carolina; her seven (7) grandchildren: JeVelle Rowe, RJ Carter, Kendra Sumiel, Kameron Jones, Jerry Brown, Fatima Williams, and Marcus Davis; and eleven (11) great- grandchildren. Also cherishing her memory is her sister, Daisy B. McCree Moore (Robert -Deceased) of Greenwood, South Carolina; brother, Jerry Glenn Williamson (Cookie) of Hampton, Virginia; sister-in-law, Lillie Ruth Hill of Fountain Inn, South Carolina; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, students, colleagues, and friends.

A Service of Triumph will be held on Saturday, April 20 at 11AM in the auditorium of the Westmoreland High School, 16762 Kings Highway, Montross, Virginia.

Interment will follow in the Historyland Memorial Park, 11227 James Madison Parkway, King George, Virginia.

Viewing will be on Saturday, April 20 from 9AM until service time at Westmoreland High School, 16762 Kings Highway, Montross, Virginia.
