Deaconess Rosa Marie Byrd Obituary

Rosa Marie Byrd, affectionately known as Re by her family and friends, was born to the late Henry and Josephine Jones on January 6, 1942, in Westmoreland County, VA. She was called home by the Lord on Thursday, December 12, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. As the road became rough, and the hills too hard to climb, God, in His infinite mercy, extended His almighty hand, beckoning her with a whisper, “Peace Be Thine.” Without fear, Rosa reached out and took His hand, journeying peacefully to the Promised Land.

Her faith journey began early in life. She accepted Christ at a young age and became a devoted member of Little Zion Baptist Church in Oak Grove, VA, where she remained an active and faithful member throughout her life. She was the Sunday School Secretary for over 30 years, sang in the Senior Choir and became a Deaconess under the Pastorate of the late Rev. William B. Scott. Her unwavering commitment to the Lord and her church family was a reflection of the love and devotion she had for God. Rosa’s love for God was evident in every part of her life. She leaves behind family and friends that will forever cherish the memories of her gentle spirit, her unwavering faith, and the love she poured into every relationship.

On August 17, 1957, Rosa Marie was united in holy matrimony to the late Thomas Byrd. From that union, they were blessed with six children. One daughter, Frances Marie Byrd-Freely, preceded her in death.

Rosa was employed at the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Dahlgren, Virginia, having retired in September 1994, after more than 25 years of service. She earned the respect and admiration of her colleagues through her hard work and commitment.

To all who knew her, she was a beacon of love, wisdom, and grace. Her life was a living testament to the power of faith, family, and the bonds that hold us together. One of the guiding principles of her life was her belief in the words of Proverbs 22:6, “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” This scripture was not just words to her; it was the foundation on which she built her family. She instilled in each of her children, their spouses, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchild a love for the Lord and for one another. Her faith was passed down through the generations, and it will continue to shine in the lives of all who were touched by her love.

One of her greatest joys was the fellowship shared after Sunday worship, as the family gathered around the table in the warmth of one another’s company. It was a tradition she cherished deeply. No matter how busy life became, those family gatherings were a time for connection, reflection, and gratitude. She loved being surrounded by her family, and the love she poured into those moments will never be forgotten.

Her home was always open, her heart always welcoming. The lessons she taught, not just through words, but through her actions, will live on in the hearts of all those who had the privilege of being part of her life.

Her legacy is one of unwavering love, faith, and family, and we are forever grateful for the time we had with her. Though she is no longer with us, her spirit continues to guide and inspire us, especially as we gather around the family table and carry forward the traditions, she so lovingly upheld.
She is survived by her loving family, three sons, Thomas L. (Patricia), Lewis (Sylvia) of Colonial Beach, VA, and George Sr. of Mechanicsville, VA; two daughters, Brenda Baker (Greg) of Richmond, VA, and Grace White (Michael) of King George, VA; a granddaughter who she raised as a daughter, Janet Ball (George) of Colonial Beach, VA, three brothers Moses Jones of Colonial Beach, VA, Raymond Jones (Sue) of Stafford, VA, and Joseph Jones (Sarah) of King George, VA; two sisters, Thelma Saunders and Evelyn Cox both of Colonial Beach, VA; one aunt, Alberta Byrd; three sisters-in-law, Beatrice Berry (William) of Fort Washington, MD, Rose Byrd and Ella Mae Jones both  of Colonial Beach, VA, 11 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends too numerous to name.

Nothing on earth endures…But the love of God who sent His son is forever and forever yours!
