Dorothy B Jones

Dorothy Young Ball Jones, 97, of Kinsale, Virginia passed away on Monday, June 29, 2026, at VCU Health Tappahannock Hospital, Tappahannock, Virginia.

Dorothy was born on Monday, February 25, 1929, in Tucker Hill, VA to the late Henry and Daisy Ball. She was one of 14 children. She grew up in the Pekatone area of Westmoreland County where she was educated in the public school system. At an early age, she accepted Jesus Christ at Zion Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend Waverly Taylor and remained a lifelong member at Zion until her health failed. She took pride in the fact that she was the oldest member of her home church.

She was united in holy matrimony to the love of her life, Charlie T. Jones, Sr. on October 17, 1948, for 64 years. To this union seven boys and five girls were born.

She was preceded in death by her husband Charlie and her two sons Charlie Junior and Clyde, as well as her parents and siblings Taft Turner, James, John, Robert, Lucy Ann, Elijah, Mary, Isaiah, Walter, Willie and Louis Ball, and Lottie Mae Kelly.

Dorothy loved spending time with her children and other family members who loved to gather at the homeplace to share food, fun, and love. In addition to rearing a large family, she worked numerous jobs during her lifetime mainly in the seafood processing industry and selling beauty products for Avon, where she made many life-long friends along the way. She also volunteered for the American Red Cross, American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, and served as a volunteer on the church kitchen committee at her home church for many years. In addition, she was an avid vegetable gardener, home canner, and unofficial family historian to many families in the area. Two of her canned items--strawberry preserves and green tomato pickle relish—were both beloved and sought out by her children, cousins, and other folks in the DMV. One of her favorite dishes that she loved to fix during the holidays was her famous candied yams, which was so beloved by some family members that they would scrape the pan to get that last little bit of caramelized syrup. She enjoyed watching services every Sunday at Little Zion Baptist, Zion Lottsburg, and her home church, Zion Baptist Church. At each service she enjoyed pointing out all the people she knew and proceeded to provide a little history for each person. Last but not least, she was also an avid Philadelphia Eagles fan who rarely missed a game.

Dorothy leaves to cherish her precious memories 5 sons: James (Debbie) Lorton, Virigina, William, Williamsburg, VA, Michael (Vernell), Kinsale, VA, Jeffrey (Sonya), Manvel, Texas, and Ronald (Adria), Fredericksburg, VA; 5 daughters: Eartha Ball, Waldorf, MD, Mary Lucy Jones, Washington, DC, Emily Thompson, Indian Head, MD, Wendy Veney, Lorton, VA, and Serita Daniel (Efrem), LaPlata, MD; one sister Sarah Samuels of Fredericksburg, VA; 27 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and lifelong friends.
