Dorothy Louise Veney Obituary

Dorothy Veney of Warsaw, Virginia departed this life on Thursday, July 14, 2022, at her home.

Dorothy Louise Brown Veney, 92, passed away peacefully at home on July 14, 2022, surrounded by her loving son, Waverly, and Rachelle Gaines, who she referred to as her daughter.  She was born on March 5, 1930, in Nomini Grove (Westmoreland County), Virginia, and was the tenth child of Allen Brown and Pearl Virginia McKenney Brown.  Dorothy had nine brothers and five sisters.  She married Allen Austin Veney on August 12, 1948 and they remained a loving couple for over 49 years.  To this union two wonderful sons were born: Stephan Elgan and Waverly Alphonso.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Allen; twelve of her siblings: Florence, Elsie, Thomas, Viola, Victor, Elwood, Lyle, Annie, Mervin, Douglas, Conrad, and Warren; her son Stephan Elgan (June 2021); and her grandson Kinte Veney (Sept. 2007).

Dorothy spent most of her formative years in Nomini Grove, Virginia where she attended Kremlin Elementary School and A. T. Johnson High School.  She moved to Emmerton, Virginia after marrying Allen where she became a mother figure to many and was affectionately known as “Mama Dorothy” to many in her new neighborhood and family.

Dorothy was molded and groomed to be a faithful, God-serving woman.  Dignity, strength of character, straight-forward, sweet, friend and confidant are all words that best described her.  She was a stay-at-home mom for many years to her young children. Later, she worked as a domestic engineer for several prominent families in the Warsaw, Virginia area. Dorothy was a loyal and dedicated member of Galilee for her entire life and regularly attended her husband’s home church, Mulberry Baptist Church, during their marriage.  She relished in singing with the Galilee Senior Choir, the Northern Neck Convention Choir, sewing, cooking, traveling the world, and cruising the Caribbean with her family.  If someone said “let’s go”, her bags were packed and she was ready.  Dorothy also had a special passion for visiting with the sick and shut-in, and helping people where ever she could.

Dorothy’s kind spirit and loving nature will be missed by many.  She leaves this legacy of love to her devoted son, Waverly, and daughter-in-law, Irene Veney; five grandchildren, Keith Ball (Crystal), Wavely Veney, Lisa Brown, Stephan Veney, Jr., and Kenyatta (Shadonna) Veney; six great-grandchildren, Austin Veney, Julian Ball, Raina Veney, Kincie Veney, and Tiana Ball; one sister, Irene Riles-Jordan; granddaughter-in-law, Alex Veney (son-Giuseppi); and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Service of Remembrance will be held on Saturday, July 23 at 2PM in the sanctuary of the Galilee Baptist Church, 20461 Kings Highway, Montross, Virginia.

Interment will follow in the Mulberry Baptist Church Cemetery, 1156 Mulberry Road, Farnham, Virginia.

Remains may be viewed from 1PM until service time on Saturday at Galilee Baptist Church.
