Elnora E. Ashton Johnson Obituary

Elnora E. Johnson affectionately known as “Snooks” peacefully transitioned into eternal life on Wednesday, May 18, 2022. Elnora was born on July 13, 1939, to Robert “Rossie” and Virgie “Elizabeth” Ashton in Montross, VA.

Elnora accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age, and was baptized at Siloam Baptist Church in Montross, VA. She received her education from Zacata Elementary School and AT Johnson High School. She furthered her education by attending Tappahannock Community College.

In 1957, Elnora met Charles “Sonny” Johnson. They fell deeply in love and joined union in 1962. Charles proudly served in the US Army, resulting in Elnora becoming a military wife. She absolutely loved Charles and was proud to go everywhere he was stationed. They were married for 59 years and enjoyed 64 loving years together. During their union they devoted their life to raising their children Sonya “Lisa”, Patrick “Ricky”, Charles, Gifford, and Robert.

Elnora was a very hard worker! She worked at the Westmoreland Berry Farm, Schofield Cosmetic Plant, Heritage Hall Nursing Home, Tappahannock Nursing Home, Stratford Hall Dining Room, Leggett and the Bon Air Juvenile Detention Center. After many years of working, she retired in 1994.

Elnora had a passion for cooking and baking! When her and Charles moved back to Westmoreland County, she decided to start her catering career. Her recipes became favorites to many near and far. Everything she prepared was delicious and made with love. She specialized in fruitcakes, ham biscuits, and rolls. She also enjoyed making strawberry ice cream pie, homemade pizza, baked and decorated cakes, just to name a few. As she started to get older, her sisters continued to run the catering business, now known as Ashton’s Catering.

Elnora joined Shiloh Baptist Church in Montross, VA with her husband and family. She was an active member of the following church auxiliaries: Sunday School, Church Nurse, Usher Board, Royal Gospel Choir, Missionary Ministry, and Church Trustee. She also organized the first Vacation Bible School for the church.

Elnora was truly one of a kind! She loved children, teaching them the word of God, and providing the best experiences life could bring! She was nurturing, compassionate, patient, and committed to her family! She loved unconditionally and gave wholeheartedly.
