Enos Verdell Winder, Sr. was born on September 17th, 1946, to the late Dorothy Lowe Newman and George Winder. Born in Westmoreland County, he was affectionately known as “Birkie Lowe.”
Birkie began his education in Westmoreland County. After relocating to Washington D.C., Birkie continued his education at Spingarn High School and graduated from Job Corp. Shortly after graduation, Birkie began his career as a microfilm technician at the National Archives in Washington D.C. and Adelphi Maryland. He labored as a committed employee upon retiring with over 40 + years of service.
With a great passion for music, Birkie played several instruments including the saxophone, piano and bass guitar. He attended several churches throughout his life where he shared his musical talents as a pianist. Birkie loved to dance! He participated in dance competitions and even won a few. He was also a member of several bands throughout the Washington D.C. metropolitan area.
Birkie favorite pastimes included hanging out with his favorite nephew/best friend, Cassis and travelling to Virginia to spend time with his mother as well as fishing with his family and friends. As he moved into a new season, Birkie moved to Virginia with his son, Enos, where he lived until he was called to eternal rest on Thursday, October 3rd, 2024.
Birkie’s love, life and legacy will forever live through his family for generations to come. He was predeceased by both parents, Dorothy Lowe Newman and George Winder; his brother, George “Piggy” Winder; his niece, Dianne Winder; and his grandson, Shane Hickman.
Through the union of two marriages to Donna Smith as well as Claudia Bell, Birkie leaves to cherish to his memory his loving children: Enos V. Winder, Jr. (Terria), Calvin Gant (April), and Dominique Bell-Linton (Danny); a loving sister, Doris Perry; nephews: Verdell Winder (Trina), Malcolm Winder (Cassandra), and James “Cassis” Brooks (Angela); grandchildren: Shynarra Winder, Donavon Winder, Collin Winder, Michael Johnson, Dasha Mahoney; great-grandson, Mateo Mahoney; a special grandson named James Brooks Jr.; along with a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
A Funeral Service for Enos V. Winder, Sr., will be held on Saturday, October 12 at 11AM in the sanctuary of Zion Baptist Church, 1274 Zion Church Road, Kinsale, Virginia.
Interment will follow in the Zion Baptist Church Cemetery.
Remains may be viewed from 10AM until service time on Saturday, October 12 at Zion Baptist Church.
