Esther Johnson Hocker

Esther J. Hocker was born on April 10, 1937 in Westmoreland County, Virginia. On July 20, 2021, God called upon her and she joined Him through the gates of Heaven.

She received her education in the public schools of Westmoreland County. Esther was a member of Siloam Baptist Church. She later moved to Richmond and became a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church.

Esther, known to many as “Ganny”, had a beautiful smile and a sparkling eye that lit up a room. Every Saturday Ganny would ride the GRTC bus from downtown Richmond to Kmart over on the southside on Midlothian. That is where she spent her day from dawn to dusk. She absolutely loved shopping and never missed a Saturday. It came to the point where everyone said, “I don’t want to go with you Ganny because you take too long in the store.” Even her sister, Gracie couldn’t take it any longer.

Ganny was a very kind person and a true sweetheart. She didn’t have much but whatever she did have, she gave. Her favorite TV shows were Good Times, The Jeffersons, Sanford and Son, soap operas, and the Price is Right.

Esther is preceded in death by her husband, Frank Hocker; daughter, Lorraine H. Toler; father, Daniel H. Johnson; mother, Christine D. Johnson; sisters, Dorothy Carey, Laura Johnson, and Shirlene Burton; and her brothers, Elwood and Connie Johnson.

She is survived by her daughter, Louise McCray (Joseph) of Richmond, VA; son, Tony Hocker of Richmond, VA; sisters, Grace Dugger of Richmond, VA, Mary Johnson of Hague, VA, Nettie Ann Champ of Falls Church, VA, Reverend Cathy Abney of Pennsylvania, Hazel Robinson (Donald) of Fredericksburg, VA, and Darlene Burton (Jesse) of Montross, VA; brothers, James Johnson of Newark, NJ, Stuart Johnson of Richmond, VA, and Larry Johnson of Connecticut. She also leaves behind three grandchildren LaToya and Zikia Hocker, and Joshua McCray; two great-grandchildren, Stacey Brunson and Mya Martin; and a host of other family members

Funeral services for Esther Johnson Hocker will be held on Wednesday, July 28, 2021 at 11AM in the chapel of the WELDON-FISHER FUNERAL HOME.

Interment will follow in the Siloam Baptist Church Cemetery, 1614 Zacata Road, Montross, Virginia

Her remains may be viewed from 10AM until service time on Wednesday at the funeral home.
