With heartfelt love and cherished memories, we celebrate the life of Gatewood Gaskins, who peacefully departed this life on May 9, 2026, at the age of 89. His life was a testament to hard work, perseverance, friendship, and love for family.
Gatewood was born on December 3, 1936, in Threeway, Virginia, to the late Moses Burton and Estelle Thompson. He was raised in a close-knit family and attended Beth Ethel School in Threeway, where he received his early education.
As a young man, Gatewood left school to begin working and helping provide for himself and his family. His strong work ethic led him to Washington, D.C., where he worked for the George Hyman Construction Company. Throughout his life, he traveled and worked in various locations, including Mississippi and Wildwood, New Jersey, where he worked aboard a fishing boat. He also spent time employed with Potomac Supply Company in Kinsale, Virginia.
Gatewood later met Florence Johnson and together they shared many cherished years. From this relationship his son, Moses Johnson, was born. Together they built memories that would last a lifetime.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Moses Burton and Estelle Thompson, and siblings: John W. Burton, Robert Burton, William Thomas Burton, Randolph Burton, Dorothy Burton Fauntleroy, Pearl Burton Crooke, and Yvonne Burton
Gatewood leaves behind one son, Moses Johnson; grandson, Jordan Simmons; a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and friends who will forever cherish his memory.
Gatewood also treasured the friendships he shared with Jack Jones, James Clark, Mavis Jones, Edwin “Chuckie” Clark, and Odell Jones, whose companionship enriched his life throughout the years.
Though he has departed from our sight, Gatewood’s legacy of kindness, determination, and friendship will remain in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. His memory will continue to inspire and comfort those he leaves behind.
