Obituary

In the early morning hours of February 12, 2023, God extended His almighty hand of love and gently took Mr. George Ellis Hunter, Sr. to a home of joy, peace, and happiness.

George was born December 5, 1945, in Westmoreland County to the late William Hampton Hunter and Lue Emma Brooks-Hunter where he resided throughout his life. He was educated in the Westmoreland County Public School System.  At an early age, he accepted Christ as his Savior at Siloam Baptist Church where he served faithfully as a guitarist for the Men’s Choir and J.B. Lee Chorus until his health failed.

At the age of 21, George joined the United States Army, where he began intensive field training in 1965, with the 4th Armored Division in Germany. George attained the rank of Sergeant and was the squad leader assigned to Headquarters Company, 3rd Battalion of the division’s 51st Infantry. In 1972, Sgt Hunter received an Honorable Discharge. When he ended his military career, George came home and worked many years at Arrowhead Associates Inc. before beginning a career spanning over three decades at the Virginia Department of Transportation and Corrections.

On December 8, 1968, George married Joeanne Turner and together raised six children. Those remembering George will think of his genuineness toward people. He taught his family to be God fearing, work hard, and honor commitments. He was humble man who found pleasure in simple things such as watching his favorite television shows, playing guitar with his brother or nephews, or sitting around chatting with family and friends.

George was preceded in death by his parents, William and Lou; wife, Joeann Hunter, three daughters, Wanda Dameron (Darryl), Linda Blagmon, and Ada Turner; and sisters, Mary Ashton (Lonnie) and Otey Marie Coleman (Joe).

He leaves to cherish his life and memory, one daughter, Amy; two sons, George, Jr. (Kelsey) and Corey (Brittney); and nine grandchildren, Darris, Kervin Jr., Deja, George III, Jayden, Kori, Kannon, Lawson, and Jane Anne.

He also leaves to cherish his memory, 3 sisters, Jean, Ada (Rev. Wilbur Dameron), and Minister Gloria (Charles); two brothers, William (Ellie) and Dr. Robert (Patricia); six sisters-in-law, Lucy (Bill), Hannah, Mary Daniel (Sam), Betty, Roberta, and Ellen; six brothers-in-law, Warren, James (Lorrie), Minister Oscar Jr. (Stephanie), Robert (Helen), George, and Herbie; and special friends, Linwood Tate, Earl, James Jones (Tootsie), Alonzo Ashton, and the VDOT crew. George also leaves many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends to forever cherish his memory in their hearts.

Home going Service will be held on Wednesday, February 22 at 12 Noon in the sanctuary of the Siloam Baptist Church, 1614 Zacata Road, Montross, Virginia.

Interment will follow in the Siloam Baptist Church Cemetery.

A viewing will be held from 4PM until 6PM on Tuesday, February 21 in the chapel of the WELDON-FISHER FUNERAL HOME and from 10AM until service time on Wednesday at Siloam Baptist Church.
