Gertrude Haskins Sumter

Gertrude Haskins-Sumter peacefully departed this life on Saturday, November 16, 2024, at her residence in Colonial Beach, Virginia surrounded by her family.  Gertrude was born on December 27, 1938, to the late Riley and Gertrude Fortune-Haskins.  She was educated in Westmoreland County Public Schools.  She was a dedicated worker at Heritage Hall in King George, VA.

Gertrude wholeheartedly embraced her faith in Jesus Christ and became a dedicated member of Little Zion Baptist in Oak Grove, VA. Where she was an active member until her health declined.

Gertrude was a loyal fan of the Washington Commanders, Wrestling and enjoyed working in her crossword puzzle books.  She enjoyed spending quality time with her family and friends on Sunday’s.

Gertrude was preceded in death by her parents Riley and Gertrude Haskins, her sons Joseph Perry Sumter, Alphonso Sumter, Anthony Lamont Sumter and her granddaughter Tranae A. Sumter Her siblings Mary M. Hunter, Leroy Haskins, Lloyd Haskins, Rosa L. Moore and Tazewell Fortune.

Gertrude’s beautiful memories will always be cherished by her children Glen Leon Sumter (Gladys), Janice Sumter-Coatney, April Renee Newton (Troy) and Sheree Contina Sumter; her daughter-in-law, Brenda Sumter; her siblings Catherine L. Reed, Malchiar Haskins, and Riley Haskins.  Her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A Funeral Service for Gertrude Haskins Sumter of Colonial Beach, Virginia will be held on Monday, November 25 at 12 Noon in the sanctuary of the Little Zion Baptist Church, 7748 Leedstown Road, Oak Grove, Virginia.

Interment will follow in the Little Zion Baptist Church Cemetery.

The viewing will begin at 11AM until service time on Monday, November 25 at Little Zion Baptist Church.
