Gladys Marie Henry, a woman of profound grace and unwavering devotion, completed her earthly journey on Saturday evening, April 25, 2026. Born on March 28, 1941, in Westmoreland County to Henry Benjamin and Gladys Wilson Jones, Gladys was one of ten children. Her life was defined by the quiet strength and nurturing spirit she offered to everyone she knew.
Gladys received her education through the Westmoreland County Public School system in her early years until she stopped to become a caregiver to her mother. A lifelong disciple of Christ, Gladys joined Zion Baptist Church in her youth. Under the leadership of Bishop Donn R. Hall, she remained a pillar of faith until her transition. Even when her health declined, her devotion never wavered; she tuned in faithfully every Sunday via her iPad, beaming with pride as she watched her children worship and serve in the sanctuary. She lived for the “after-church” fellowship—the sound of her children’s voices in her home and the joy of a shared Sunday dinner.
On September 9, 1961, Gladys united in holy matrimony with Moses “Tootie” Henry Jr. Their 50-year union was a testament to love and partnership until his passing in 2012. Together they raised a family built on the foundation of unity—a bond so strong that her children remained by her side, providing tender care until her very last breath.
Gladys was a woman of many talents and impeccable style. Known for being “dressed to impress,” she took great joy in the latest fashions. After years of dedicated service as a domestic worker in the Kinsale and Sandy Point areas, she retired in 1998 to pour her love into her grandson Dondre as his full-time sitter. Her kitchen was the heart of the home, where she delighted in feeding her kids, “grands” and “great-grands,” teaching them that family is the greatest treasure of all. She loved the holidays, cherishing the moments when her home overflowed with the laughter and love of her family gathered together.” Her loving heart and calm spirit will be forever cherished by her children.
Gladys was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Moses, her son Carlton (Robin), sister Margaret Crabbe, brothers: William, Levi, Paul, Lessel, Add, and Louis Jones.
Gladys leaves to celebrate her life her four children: Burnestine Henry-Brooks (John), Michael (Jennifer) Henry, James (Carla) Henry, and Pamela (Russell) Wood; her devoted grand-daughter that she raised as her own Javonda Henry; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; brother, Richard (Thelma) Jones; sister, Barbara Garner; brother-in-law, Jerry (Cheryl) Henry; sisters-in-law: Elsie May, Shirley, Verna, and Cathy Jones; a hosts of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends; a special Thank You to her caregivers Arlette Gordon-Clark, Beverly Reed and Riverside Hospice.
