Homerzell Lowe- Thompson Obituary

Homerzell Lowe-Thompson, lovingly known as “Zell”, entered eternal rest on September 3, 2024, at her home in Washington, D.C. Born on May 29, 1955, in Tucker Hill, Virginia, Zell was the beloved daughter of the late Edward and Gertrude Lowe. At an early age, Zell was baptized at the Zion Baptist Church under the spiritual guidance of Dr. Waverly Taylor in Kinsale, Virginia. She also later joined Park Road Community Church, in NW Washington, D.C., where she was rebaptized.

She received her education in Westmoreland County Public Schools before relocating to Washington, D.C. in 1973. It was there that she began a distinguished career in private industry and with the federal government, where she served with dedication and pride until she retired in 2013.

Even more distinguished than Zell’s professional career, was her commitment to helping those who were less fortunate. Her extraordinary selflessness was well-known throughout the community. So much so that in 2010 her federal government agency awarded her the Community Service Award. The honor was in recognition for her, “Giving generously of her time and other resources to causes that benefit the needy, not only in Washington, D.C., but around the country and around the world”.  It was a great honor. She truly had the heart of an angel.

So, it’s no wonder that she was so beloved by her family, neighbors, and even the best friends of her children, who all considered her their second mom. The time she spent taking her nieces and nephews to amusement parks, beaches and field trips, are cherished memories that will never be forgotten and are still talked about today. She was a unique gift to the world.

Zell met the love of her life, Henry (Jackie) Thompson in 1979. Their union was a testament to enduring love and partnership, and together they built a life full of cherished memories.

Zell’s legacy lives on through her devoted husband, Henry Thompson, and her beloved children: two sons, Van (Regina) and Jared (Chasity), and one stepdaughter, Rashiya (Steve). She was a proud grandmother to three beautiful grandchildren: Siyon, Sinclair, and Chase. Zell is also survived by her siblings: three sisters, Virginia, Patsy and Mary (James); one brother, Stanley (Francine); one sister-in-law, Linda Thompson- White; and one brother-in-law Tony Stevenson (Vanessa). Zell was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Gertrude Lowe; her sisters, Constance, Jackie, Miranda, and Ann; and her brothers, William and Talmage. Zell will forever be remembered by all who were fortunate enough to know her. She also leaves to cherish a host of nieces, nephews and special friends.

Her spirit will continue to inspire and guide her family and friends as they carry her love in their hearts.
