Howard Gaines Obituary

Howard Edmond Gaines, fondly known as “Howdo,” was born on March 15, 1933, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Eleanor Cole, née Towns and Ogal Gaines. He was the fifth of seven children, part of a large, close-knit family. In the early hours of October 16, 2024, Howard was called home by the Lord, leaving behind a legacy of love, resilience, and connection.

Howard’s childhood was spent in West Philadelphia, where he began his education at Martha Washington Elementary, followed by Mayer Salzburger Junior High, and eventually graduating from West Philadelphia High School. His thirst for knowledge led him to Temple Tech University for two years, where he broadened his horizons before answering a different call.

On February 19, 1953, Howard enlisted in the United States Army, serving his country bravely during the Korean War. Rising to the rank of Corporal, he earned three medals of Honor - the National Defense Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, and the Korean Service Medal. After his service, he returned home to Philadelphia, bringing with him both strength and pride in his achievements.

It was back in Philadelphia in 1964 that Howard met Gwendolyn Maith, with whom he shared 52 years of marriage, beginning on October 3, 1964. Though they didn’t have children of their own, Howard and Gwendolyn took their nieces Ghislaine and Véronique Maith under their wing, loving them as their own daughters. His granddaughter figure, Nasya-Simone Maith Coleman, was a special joy to him, along with countless family members who cherished his warmth.

Known for his love of family, Howard was the heart of many gatherings, hosting barbecues and reunions that strengthened family bonds and kept loved ones connected. His door was always open, and his home was filled with laughter, stories, and the kind of love that lasts.
Howard leaves behind his two daughters in love, Ghislaine and Véronique Maith; his treasured granddaughter in love, Nasya-Simone Maith Coleman; sisters-in-law, Shirley Stewart and Joyce S. Maith; brother, Johnny Gaines; niece, Nicole Gaines; nephews: Ogal Gaines, III, Freddy, Johnny Junior, Ronnie, Robert, Sherman, Benjamin, and Christopher; close cousin, Elizabeth “Buddy” Henderson; goddaughter, Danielle Jeffries; and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends. His memory will live on through those who loved him deeply, the lives he touched, and the family he held so dear.

Howard’s journey reminds us of the values he embodied - courage, devotion, and an unshakable commitment to God, faith, and family. Today, as we remember him, may we find comfort in the legacy of a life well-lived, and may we keep his spirit alive in our hearts and gatherings.
