James Carey Obituary

. James Leroy Carey, also known as “Mr. Poison” and “Killer”, was born on May 11th, 1954, to the late William Henry Carey and Edna Mae Carey. He was born and raised in Westmoreland County and attended Westmoreland County Public Schools. At an early age he accepted Christ as his personal savior and joined Galilee Baptist Church. He later became a member of New Zion Baptist Church.

In his teenage years he worked on Gregory Wright’s farm and several other jobs. He drove for Dwight Snead Construction for over 20 years. He also drove for David Revere construction and a few other jobs.

On August 27th, 1977, he married his high school sweetheart, Susie Catherine Turner. They were married for forty-six years. To this union they were blessed with two sons, Terry and Jimmy; one daughter, Lawanda; and goddaughter, Tyiesha.

His passions were racing, truck driving, riding motorcycles, softball and watching football. His favorite football team was the San Francisco 49ers. He was one of the original members of the ‘Pony Riders Mustang Club’ - where his name Mr. Poison originated. He loved pitching for the Havelock Tigers where he was better known as “Killer”. He also had a profound love for music. In his free time he enjoyed watching westerns, hanging out at Ebony & Ivory, cleaning his cars and spending time with his loved ones.

Preceding his death are two sisters, Molly Gray Fauntleroy, Shirley Harvey and one brother, William ‘Buck’ Carey.

Left to cherish his memories are five grandchildren: Tiara, Elijah, Saniah, Jeremiah, and Londyn; as well as two bonus grandchildren, Keyona and Kelyce Jones; three brothers: Richard (Lisa), Robert (Leatha), and Leonard (Charlie); one bonus sister, Naomi Clark (Robert) known to most as “Nunnie”; three sisters-in-law: Carolyn Brown, Sharon Hardin, and Jackie Clarke; brother-in-law, William Cowles; his closest friends were: Ant, Pete, Sonny, Abraham, Melvin, Charles, James, Beaver, Art, Froggy, Darryl, Jack, and Karen; and a host of nieces and nephews, cousins, great nephews, great nieces; and many friends and family from the racing community.
