James Maiden Obituary

James "Jimmy" Maiden of Oak Grove, Virginia departed this life on Thursday, May 12, 2022.

James Wilford Maiden, affectionally referred to as Jimmy, was born on May 8, 1926, in Westmoreland County, VA to the late Wilford and Minnie Maiden.  Jimmy was the oldest of six children.

On May 12, 2022 (four days after his 96 birthday) at his home, surrounded by family Jimmy quietly and peacefully transitioned from labor to eternal rest.

Jimmy accepted Jesus Christ at an early age and united with the Little Zion Baptist Church.

In December 1942, Jimmy joined the Navy and fought in World War II aboard the USS Corregidor.  He received an honorable discharge in April 1946.

Jimmy was united in marriage to Roberta S. Maiden (predeceased) in September 1953. To this union two children were born: James Maiden, Jr. (predeceased) and Lynn Maiden.

Jimmy was employed by the Naval Proving Ground for over 30 plus years before retiring in 1982. Jimmy was not a man to be idle so after retirement he and his brother, Gordon, started a lawn mowing business.  He took pride in cutting grass and cut his clients’ yards to perfection. He even passed down his grass cutting skills to his son Lynn.  Jimmy was also a member of the Oak Grove Volunteer Fire Department and became a Charter member after retiring.

Jimmy loved life, and he loved Lynn.  He enjoyed fishing, dancing, and good company.  Jimmy had a sense of humor and would share funny stories from his childhood.  Whenever you visited, and got up to leave, he would start sharing another story and you’d find yourself staying another hour.

Jimmy leaves to reflect and cherish his memory a loving and devoted son, Lynn Maiden, Colonial Beach, VA; one sister, Esther Jett (Norman), Woodbridge, VA; one brother-in-law, Wilbert Self, Cherry Hill, NJ; three nephews – Henry Maiden, Jr. (Kathy); Stanley Wayne Maiden (Anne) and Willard Maiden; six nieces – Deborah Cooper (Michael), Phyllis Maiden, Carolyn Johnson (James), Marion Bailey, Teresa Broussard, and Lorraine Randall (Brian). A very special great nephew, Ernest “EJ” Bailey, Jr., and a host of great nieces, nephews, and friends.

Jimmy was preceded in death by his sister, Ruth Maiden, and his three brothers – Henry Maiden, Gordon Maiden, and Stanley Maiden.
