James William Hickman, Jr. Obituary

James William Hickman, Jr., son of the late James and Daisy Hickman, was born on March 25, 1947 in Westmoreland County, Virginia.


James, affectionately known as “Jr.” and “Hick”, accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior at an early age and joined Macedonia Baptist Church under the pastorship of the Rev. Ralph E. Cabbell.

James obtained his education in Westmoreland County Public Schools.  On June 29, 1966, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and completed his tour of duty in June 1972.  After serving in the Army, he accepted a job at the D.C. Department of Corrections at Lorton Reformatory as a Correctional Officer and was later promoted to Investigator.  After working 25 years at the D.C. Dept. of Corrections, he retired in March of 1997.  

James was an avid bowler for many years.  His prize possession was a Superbowl style gold ring he received for bowling a perfect game. He also enjoyed watching the Washington Commanders’ games, NASCAR and drag races.

James departed this life on Wednesday, November 27, 2024 at Charlotte Hall Veteran’s Home in Charlotte Hall, MD. He was preceded in death by his wife, Peggie; his parents; a sister, Mary Teller (James); and a brother, David Hickman, Sr. 

James leaves to cherish fond memories his daughter, Kristie Ware of White Plains, MD; his son, Ashley Holley of Ft. Washington, MD; two grandchildren, London Douglas and Jordon Ware of White Plains, MD; three brothers, Frank Hickman (Toni), Joseph Hickman (Marie) both of Hague, VA, and Allen Hickman (Mamie) of Montross, VA;  three sisters, Virginia Shepherd and Blanche Hickman of Colonial Beach, VA, and Barbara Brown of Ft. Washington, MD; a sister-in-law, Correna Hickman of Farnham, VA; a godbrother, George Payne of Colonial Beach, VA; a godsister, Linda Buckner of King George, VA; two aunts, Idabell Bushrod of King George, VA and Hazel Bushrod of Capitol Heights, MD; his buddy Herb Laster; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.   

A Service of Remembrance for James William Hickman, Jr., will be held on Friday, December 6 at 12 Noon in the sanctuary of the Macedonia Baptist Church, 1081 Macedonia Lane, Colonial Beach, Virginia.

Interment will follow in the Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery.

The viewing will begin 11AM until service time on Friday, December 6 at Macedonia Baptist Church.
