Leon Laws, 89, of Hustle, Virginia, peacefully departed this life on October 11, 2025, at Spotsylvania Regional Medical Center.
Born on September 20, 1936, in Downings, Virginia, Leon was the beloved son of the late George and Suzie Laws. He was one of fourteen children and a proud product of Richmond County Public Schools.
Leon accepted Christ at an early age and joined Mt. Zion Baptist Church, where his faith remained a guiding force throughout his life.
A man who loved the outdoors, Leon found joy in hunting, fishing, camping, and traveling. He also delighted in exploring new restaurants, always eager to sample different cuisines and share those experiences with others. A true automotive enthusiast, Leon especially loved Ford vehicles, proudly keeping them polished, running strong, and road-ready at all times.
Professionally, Leon dedicated over 30 years of service to the Arlington County Government, where he worked as a Heavy Equipment Supervisor. His hard work, leadership, and commitment to excellence left a lasting impact on his colleagues and community. Upon retirement, he continued to enjoy life to the fullest—never losing his love of adventure or his generous spirit.
Leon is preceded in death by his loving parents, George and Suzie Laws, and his siblings Bernice Bradshaw, Elizabeth Thompson, Robert Laws, Earl Laws, Mary Scott, Virginia Croxton, Fanny Veney, Christine Veney, Roland Laws, Levern Laws, and Calvin Laws.
He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted life partner, Willie Pearl McCoy; one brother, Lloyd Edward Laws (Grace) of Farnham, VA; one sister, Deloris Ball of Farnham, VA; his children, Leon Haynie (Margaret) of Woodbridge, VA, and Lolita Laws of Dumfries, VA; stepdaughters Brenda Thompson of Woodbridge, VA, and Alma Stevens of Jacksonville, FL; grandchildren Shannon Haynie, Leon Haynie Jr., and Ella Woodson; great-grandchildren Janiya Rice & Jabar Rice Jr; eleven step-grandchildren; twenty-four step-great-grandchildren, and a host of more than 63 nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Leon’s presence, wisdom, and laughter will be deeply missed but forever remembered by all who were blessed to know him. His life was one of hard work, faith, family, and love—a legacy that will live on for generations.
A Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, October 23 at 11AM in the sanctuary of the Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Farnham, Virginia.
The interment will follow in the church cemetery.
Remains may be viewed from 4PM until 6PM on Wednesday, October 22 in the chapel of the WELDON-FISHER FUNERAL HOME-and from 10AM until service time on Thursday, October 23 at Mt. Zion Baptist Church.
