Linwood Johnson Obituary

Linwood O. Johnson, son of the late Robert and Susie Smith Johnson was born on April 8, 1924 in Oak Grove, Virginia and departed this life on February 11, 2023 at the Westmoreland Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center, Colonial Beach, Virginia.

He joined the Little Zion Baptist Church at an early age.  He was united in matrimony to the late Effie Mae Baylor on May 29, 1943 and from this union three children were born. On April 15, 1988 he was joined in marriage to Bertha Johnson of Hague, Virginia.

Linwood joined the U.S. Navy in 1944 during World War II where he served for two years. After his military service he was employed at the U.S. Naval Weapons Laboratory in Dahlgren, Virginia. He was employed there for over 44 years and was promoted to supervisor in 1971. He received numerous awards and certificates during that time.

If you ever sat down to talk with him he would tell you stories about the war and you couldn’t shut him up. We listened faithfully and smiled on the side.

Linwood worked very hard to support his family over the years. He raised live stock and had a plentiful garden for several years. He invited family members and friends to partake of his bounty.  He also enjoyed trips to Atlantic City and fishing off the shores at Washington’s Birthplace. He loved to work on his own automobiles and could not wait for deer season to go hunting.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Elise Payne Pepper; granddaughter, Lavisha Baylor; and stepson, Brian Johnson.

He leaves to mourn: A loving wife, Bertha; three children, Brenda Johnson, Morningside, Maryland, Susie Travers (Joseph, deceased) Clinton, Maryland, Linwood Johnson, Jr. Fredericksburg, Virginia; two granddaughters, Angela Chapman (Glenn), Carissa Mason (Ernest), one special great granddaughter, Bianca Hart; five grandsons, Omar Rashaud Johnson (Brandi), Effren Johnson (Rachel), Ian Johnson, Calvin Payne, Jr. (Bernita) and Stacey Payne (Karen); one stepdaughter, Maggie Holmes (Bruce); two stepsons, James Johnson (Rochella) and Charles Johnson (Marcella); three sisters-in-law, Ann Rose, Sandra Lewis and Shirley Lewis; two brothers-in-law, Joe Lewis and Raymond Lewis; one special step grandson, Isiah Holmes; one special step granddaughter, Jameka Johnson; five step grandchildren, Kermani Johnson, Jamel Johnson, Brian Williams, Trent Johnson, Charles Johnson, Jr.; three special nephews, Timothy, Tyrone and Jonathan Lewis; two special nieces, Robin Johnson and Gloria Gene Bryant; and a host of great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
