Maria Ashton Obituary

Maria B. Ashton, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister and friend, passed away on May 31, 2023.  She was born on March 31, 1945, in Westmoreland County, Virginia to the late Frank Esau Ashton and Martha Ann Brown.

Maria received her education from the public school system of Westmoreland County, Virginia.  Immediately after high school she moved to Philadelphia, PA where she was employed by Sears Roebuck and was also a live-in nanny for several years before returning back to Westmoreland County.  Upon returning she was a blessing to many families by caring for their little loved ones.

“Suckee” as she was affectionally known by many was a loving mother who cared for her children and grandchildren.  She loved to cook and she loved everything baseball, she was an avid Washington Nationals fan.  She even watched them while she was in the hospital.

On May 31, 2023 God saw fit to call her on to her final resting place, she leaves to cherish her wonderful memories a loving companion of 51 years, Ray Cupid.

Suckee leaves to cherish her loving memories to four children:  Deborah Ashton, Michael Ashton(Javon), Kevin Ashton, and Tristonia Johnson (Martaviest); one bonus son her great nephew, Redell Crabbe (Deborah); eight grandchildren:  Dante Day, Anthony Trey Wilkins (Jahania), Kali Rae Ashton, J’Andre Ashton, J’Wan Ashton, Destiny Ashton, Serenity Kelly, Mariel Johnson; four great-grandchildren:  Damari Day, Mariah Wilkins, Camille Wilkins, Alona Johnson; one brother, Harold Ashton (Phyllis) of Temple Hills, MD; three sisters:  Helen Johnson (Edward) of Montross, VA, Mary Ashton of Waldorf, MD, Martha Johnson of Spotsylvania, VA; sisters-in-law, Emma Ashton and Effie Ashton both of Montross, VA; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents Frank and Martha Ashton; siblings:  Moses Ashton, Alex Brown (Betty), Richard Ashton, James Ashton, Frank Louis Ashton, Lloyd “Fonz” Ashton, Bertha Wilson, Pearle Crabbe (Arthur); brother-in-law, Connie Johnson.

Celebration of Life services for Maria B. “Suckee” Ashton will be on Thursday, June 8 at 12 Noon in the sanctuary of Potomac Baptist Church, 6099 Nomini Hall Road, Hague, Virginia.

Interment will follow in the Potomac Baptist Church Cemetery.

Remains may be viewed from 4PM until 6 PM on Wednesday, June 7 in the chapel of the WELDON-FISHER FUNERAL HOME and from 10AM until service time on Thursday at Potomac Baptist Church.
