Mary Elizabeth Garner was called home peacefully to be with the Lord on Thursday afternoon, March 28, 2024. Mary was born on August 19, 1953, at Poplar Plains, Westmoreland County, Va. to the late Robert Smith and the late Dorothy Garner. She was raised by the late Pat and Florence {Henry} Weldon. Mary was educated in the Westmorland County Public School system and graduated early at the age of 17. At an early age she joined Jerusalem Baptist Church.
Mary was known for her kind and gentle spirit. She enjoyed helping others and it came naturally to her. She worked for many years helping others at Warsaw Medical Center as a CNA until her health began to deteriorate in 2001. She was a great homemaker, who loved her family dearly. If she wasn’t spending time with her close friends and/or family, she enjoyed watching old TV shows like “I love Lucy”, “The Golden Girls”, and even found a love for the show “Naked and Afraid”. She also enjoyed mastering crossword puzzle books and working on thousand-piece jigsaw puzzles.
Mary leaves to cherish her memory, her two sons and daughters-in-law: Eric Garner Sr. {Lana}, Chesterfield, Va., and Damien Garner {Lapae}, Warsaw, Va.; grandchildren: Eric Garner II, Elijah Garner and Edward Garner; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Lee Garner, Temple Hills, Md., and Malcolm Weldon {Valarie}, Warsaw, Va.; six nieces: Kenyada {Weldon} Williams {Nate}, Tampa, Fl., Jazmine Weldon, Suitland, Md., Erin Weldon, Warsaw, Va., Michaelle Garner, Woodbridge, Va., Cassandra Garner, Waldorf, Md., and Kimberly Churchill, Atlanta, Ga.; four nephews: Malcolm Liverpool {Cindy}, Baltimore, Md., Michael McDaniels, Alexandria, Va., Jermaine and Maurice Brown, both of Warsaw, Va.; stepmother: Marie {Kelly} Smith, Coles Point, Va.; stepsister, Phyllis Gibbs, Long Island, NY; and a host of many cousins, aunts, and two uncles.
Mary also leaves to cherish her memory, Gertrude Pratt; godson, Keith Johnson Jr.; sisters-in-love, Patricia and Donna Thompson; and a host of nieces and nephews-in-love from the Thelma {Polly} Thompson family.
From the family:
Special thanks to Valarie Weldon for being such a great caretaker, sister, and friend to Mary during her journey. She loved and thought very highly of you, and we could never repay you for all that you did and have done to make her last days as comfortable for her as possible. Again, we thank you.
