We humbly submit to God’s will as we mourn the passing of our beloved Mary Emma Washington Dixon. Born on February 14, 1942, Emma was the first daughter of Norman L. Washington and Annie Ashton Washington.
Emma received her education in the Westmoreland public school system, graduating from A.T. Johnson High School in 1961. At a young age, she accepted Christ and was baptized as a member of Siloam Baptist Church. Later, she joined Morning Star Baptist Church, where she faithfully served in various capacities, including: Usher Board, Kitchen/Culinary, Youth Sunday School Teacher and Representative for the Northern Neck Baptist Convention.
Emma was a Life Member of the Northern Neck Baptist Women’s Missionary and Education Commission. Her selfless acts of kindness included sending birthday and get-well cards to Morning Star members until her health declined.
Emma was a devoted community servant, actively involved with the NAACP, Meals on Wheels, and the Red Cross Medical Reserve.
She married Earl Benjamin Dixon in holy matrimony, and their blessed union of 54 years was blessed with four sons and one daughter.
Emma’s professional career spanned various roles, including working at the Epilepsy Foundation in Washington, D.C., and later at Scoville and the Roses’ Department Store in the pet area, where her passion for tropical fish blossomed. She also served as a floor supervisor at the White Packing Meat Company for over 20 years.
Known for her remarkable green thumb, Emma nurtured a vibrant collection of flowers. Her other treasured possessions included Salt and Pepper Shakers from all 50 states, a coin collection, and an extensive library of African American history books. Her knowledge of African American history was truly impressive.
In her free time, Emma enjoyed watching her favorite TV shows, including “The Young and the Restless,” “The Bold and the Beautiful,” “NCIS,” and “The Equalizer.” She also cherished reading and staying updated on local news.
Emma’s greatest love, however, was her faith. She had a profound understanding of the difference between religion and a personal relationship with God. Her kindness and compassion touched the lives of everyone she met, earning her a reputation as a pillar of love and generosity in her community.
Emma was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Earl “Big Wine” Dixon; son, Earl B. Dixon Jr.; grandson, Tevin “Lil Chris” Dixon, whom she helped raise; and the family’s cherished dog, Oswald (Ozzie) Dixon.
She leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories with her children, Harry Dixon (Liz) of Alexandria, VA, Norman Dixon of Montross, VA, Kimberlynn Dixon of Richmond, VA, and Christopher Dixon (Tonya) of Newport News, VA. She is also survived by her sisters: Sarah Owens of Waldorf, MD, Ruth Veney of Richmond, VA, Lucy Kelly (Reuben) of Montross, VA, and Barbara Campbell (Curtis) of Montross, VA; sisters-in-law: Lillian Braxton of Maryland, Lucy Brooks (the late James) of Hague, VA, and Mildred Brown (the late Sammy) of Hague, VA; brothers-in-law, John Dixon (Nileen) of Montross, VA and Robert Dixon (Dorothy) of Maryland; 13 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; one aunt, Eva Ashton of Montross; devoted friends and family: Purcell Ashton, Deloris”Baby Sis” Johnson, Reginald and Mary Ruth Baylor, Teresa Butler, Mr. and Mrs. James Douglas, Ms. Edna Crabbe, Annie Campbell, Jewel Douglas and John Barnes; goddaughter, Gesica Jarrett; special daughters: Geneva Dixon, Kim Whitaker, and Syreeta Ashton-Barnes.
