Mary Etta Wilson Dickens was born on February 22, 1936, to the late John and Sarah Wilson in Westmoreland County, Virginia. She was called to rest at her home in Hyattsville, Maryland, on December 2, 2021.
She was married to the late John H. Dickens, and with this union they joined their children Ethel Sligh, the late Lawrence “Timmy” Wilson, and the late Herman Dickens.
Mary graduated from Bladensburg High school and attended Catholic University. She retired from U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development in 2005, after 31 years of service.
Mary was an active member since the 1980’s of the Second New St. Paul Baptist Church in Washington, DC, where she served on the Deaconess Board, Mother’s Board, Usher’s Board, and the Missionary Ministry.
Mary loved to spend time with her family, friends, and church family. She also loved to travel and spent as much time doing so. Most of all, Mary loved the Lord and it was her strong faith that provided her strength through all her trials and tribulations, particularly during her illness. Mary was the backbone of her family and was always there in someone’s time of need. She was a sweet-natured, gentle, and generous lady who was adored by those who were blessed to be in her circle of family and friends.
Mary leaves to cherish her memory her daughter Ethel Sligh, her daughter-in-law, Kathy Dickens; brother, John E. Wilson; grandsons Greg Sligh and Jay Dickens; granddaughters, Latosha Sligh, Jerita Sligh, and Jennifer Dickens; eleven great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her sons, Lawrence “Timmy” Wilson and Herman Dickens; her brother James Wilson; sisters, Blanche Tinsley and Julia Peay; and grandson Jerome Sligh.
