Mask Required Gloria Patricia Ann (Aunt Pat) Ashton

October 31, 1951 ~ April 24, 2022 (age 70)

Obituary

Gloria Patricia Ann Ashton affectionately known as “Pat” or “Aunt Pat” peacefully transitioned into eternal life on Sunday, April 24, 2022. Pat was born on October 31, 1951, to Robert “Rossie” and Virgie “Elizabeth” Ashton in Montross, VA.

Pat accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age, and was baptized at Siloam Baptist Church in Montross, VA. She received her education from the Westmoreland County Public School System. She was an active member of the Morning Star Baptist Church in Montross, VA, where served as a member of the Ushers Ministry, Gospel Choir, Culinary Ministry, Sisters-in-Christ Ministry, and a dedicated Vacation Bible School Teacher.

Pat was a devoted mother raising two children, Shawn and Ohmer “Mann”. She was determined to make certain they had the best education and experiences in life.

Success was not an option for Pat. She moved to Washington, DC to explore better career opportunities. She furthered her education by training to become a data entry specialist for the U.S. Federal Security and Exchange Commission (SEC). After a few years in that position, she was promoted to Head Secretary of SEC’s Legal Department. In 1989, she discovered her true life calling, being a childcare provider. While working her full-time job at SEC, she enrolled in courses at Prince George’s Community College in Largo, MD to obtain her Childcare Provider License. She loved her full-time job, but after 17 years of service, she retired from the federal government early to open Ashton Daycare in Temple Hills, MD.

Pat had a passion for early childhood education. She started Ashton Daycare with the sole purpose of providing the childcare that every child deserves. Every child she encountered felt the love and patience from “Aunt Pat”. The environment she created was always safe, warm, and nurturing.  Pat was excited about early childhood development and focused on children meeting and exceeding developmental milestones. She valued independency by ensuring children mastered all necessary skills prior to graduating from Ashton Daycare. When her daycare children transitioned to elementary school, they were fully prepared and often above grade level.

Pat was an advocate for all children! She treated each child like her own. Field trips were one of her favorite activities to plan for the daycare. She felt it was important for children to experience different activities and environments. She planned trips to the library, circus, Disney ice capades, pumpkin patch, Sesame Place, Storybook Land, Hershey Park, Kings Dominion, and the list goes on. When she planned these trips, she often reached out to other daycare centers in the area so their children could participate as well. No child was left behind at Ashton Daycare! Pat truly loved and cherished children and treated each one the same. The daycare children and parents often became extended family to the entire Ashton Family. The childcare she provided was unique and beyond exceptional!
In 2007, Pat decided she wanted to move back to her hometown in Montross, VA. Alongside her sister, Ruth “Sis” Ashton Wilson, they opened Ashton Daycare in Colonial Beach, VA in 2009. Pat worked at this location until the time her of retirement in 2012.
Pat wasn’t just dedicated to children; she was dedicated to her family. She opened her home to countless family members and friends who would come and stay for a while through transitional periods in their life.  She was the original Ashton Family organizer/planner and carried this title for many years. She loved planning family outings, trips, reunions, and holiday events. Her attention to detail and the wishes of others was always top priority. She was just that amazing!

Pat was preceded in death by her parents, Robert “Rossie” and Virgie “Elizabeth” Ashton; siblings, Vernell and Christine Ashton, Virginia “Eloise” (William) Hall, and Lester Ashton; and daughter, Shannon Bowles; longtime friends, Franklin Carroll, Thelma and Tom Cartledge.

Pat was truly one of a kind! She loved unconditionally and provided generously to everyone. She was loved by many, near and far! Left to carry her legacy and cherish fond memories of her are her children, Shawn (Andre) Cooper and Ohmer Bowles; grandchildren, Andrea Smith, Candace (Donte’) Johnson, Dejon Bowles, Shannon Bowles, Jamal Jackson, Omari Bowles, Dira Hawkins and Kamari Bowles; great- grandchildren, Devin Smith, Donte’ Johnson Jr., Dionte’ Johnson, Benny Smith Jr., DeAndre Johnson, Kyla Smith, Caliah Johnson, Dominic Rawlings Jr., Brooklyn Bumbrey; siblings, Willnette Carpenter, Robert (Florence) Ashton, Elnora (Charles) Johnson, Marion (William) Johnson, Ernest (Margie) Ashton, Thomas (Diane) Ashton, Ruth Ashton Wilson, Phyllis (Raymond) Morris, Brenda (Ronald) Cummings, Barbara (Vorden) Wood, Garrey (Patricia) Ashton; godchildren; Jaren Ashton, Brittaney Wood, Lauren and Leah Johnson; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and daycare family.
