Melanie Straughter Obituary

Melanie Straughter was called home peacefully to be with the Lord, surrounded by her family February 20, 2021. Melanie was born June 19, 1979 to Gregory and Eva Jackson (Straughter). Melanie was born in Washington D.C and raised in Clinton, MD and Fredericksburg, VA.  During this time, she gave her life to Christ at Galilee Baptist Church.

Melanie graduated from Courtland with A.P. honors and later went on to earn her Bachelors of Science in Business Administration from VA Commonwealth University.

While obtaining her degrees; Melanie maintained a career as a Customer Success Specialist II with Wells Fargo. Melanie was a huge advocate for the Cancer and Lymphoma Society prior to her breast cancer diagnosis; which encouraged her to become a sponsor for the Pink Gala Society. Melanie loved jazz festivals, viewing live comedy specials, concerts, “stay” cations, fine dining, and collecting art. Melanie loved family and friends was mild mannered and quiet (besides her laugh); she was sweet, yet assertive and bluntly honest. Melanie had impeccable taste and loved shopping. Melanie was a movie buff (you better not talk while she’s watching TV). Melanie was a volunteer for the Red Cross and donated to the Keep a Child Alive Organization. Melanie was an intellectual and took interest in science, black history and finance.  Melanie participated in multiple sports including: basketball, cross country, and track and field.

Melanie lives on through her mother and father, Eva and Gregory Jackson; and brother Gregory “Lil Greg” Jackson II.  

Melanie leaves to cherish her precious memory a host of aunts and uncles: Alphonso Straughter, Colonial Beach, VA; Deborah Cockrell (Grayling), Suitland, MD; Fran Claiborne (Horace), Kannapolis, NC; Webster Straughter, Jacksonville, NC; Thomasine Clifton(Zachary), Fredericksburg, VA; Thomas Redmond (Jackie), Upper Marlboro, MD; Tammy Johnson, Montross, VA; Jonathan Redmond, Callao, VA; Wilson Redmond (Rose), Indian Head, MD; Jay Danie, Fredericksburg, VA; Maurice Redmond (Myra), Fredericksburg, VA; Valerie Gray, Champlain, VA; Gerald Posey, Washington, DC; Darnell Posey, Baltimore, MD; Thess Posey(Sandy), Leesburg, VA; multiple cousins; and devoted friends: Sheryl Macklin, Johnnie Martin, and Jami Dittus

Graveside service for Melanie Straughter will be held on Saturday, February 27, 2021 at 12 Noon at Galilee Baptist Church Cemetery,20461 Kings Highway, Montross, Virginia.

Remains may be viewed from 3PM until 6PM on Friday, February 26, 2021 in the chapel of the WELDON-FISHER FUNERAL HOME.
