Moses Jones Obituary

Moses Jones, affectionately known as Dad or Pop Pop, transitioned peacefully on Thursday, March 13, 2025, at the home of his daughter.  Moses was born on August 29, 1945, in Westmoreland County, Virginia, to the late Deacon Henry and Deaconess Josephine Jones.

Moses accepted Christ.  He was baptized and joined the Little Zion Baptist Christ at an early age.

On May 13, 1972, he was united in Holy Matrimony to Joyce Y. Jones “Babysis”. Two children completed this union, Frederick and Latoria.

Moses received his education in Westmoreland County, Virginia and graduated from A. T. Johnson High School in 1964.  After high school, he entered the United States Air Force where he served until his honorable discharge on October 4, 1968.

Moses employment opportunities included a brief stay at Ingleside Nursery and a 31-year stay at George Washington’s Birthplace, from where he retired in 2010.  He was a dedicated employee and respected by all. He retired from the position of Motor Vehicle Operator to take care of his lovely wife.

Moses loved playing baseball.  For many years, along with his brothers, Moses played with the Orange Bowl Tigers.  They traveled from town to town to play various teams and was known as “the team to beat.”  He was an avid New York Yankees fan and an avid Washington Redskins (now known as the Washington Commanders) fan. He also enjoyed hanging out and playing poker with his boys and killing hogs.  He was the neighborhood “hog killer” and the community knew whom to call on.  He was known to go around from house to house providing his services of slicing hams and turkeys mainly for the holidays, but could be called on to do it at any time for his family and friends.  Moses also loved attending the Senior Ministry luncheon.  He looked forward to sitting in his same seat each time and sharing a meal with the other seniors.

Moses loved to cruise.  He was able to enjoy two cruises with his family and friends and always asked when the next one was before leaving the ship.  He and James Lewis Smith could always be found in one of two places, enjoying the good food or people watching while relaxing on the deck chairs.

If you knew Moses, you knew his favorite thing in life was spending quality time with his children and grandchildren to include going out to eat, car rides and watching his favorite TV shows. There was nothing he would not do for them.  They were special to him and he was special to them.

Moses was preceded in death by his lovely wife, Joyce Y. Jones; parents, Deacon Henry and Deaconess Josephine Jones; brothers, William Jones, Sr.,  Daniel Jones and Marvin Jones, Sr.; sisters, Shirley Purce, Mary Alice Green and Rosa Marie Byrd; and sister-in-law, Rene Green.

Moses leaves to cherish his memories, three children, Frederick Gorham (Sandie), Latoria Carey (Jerome, Sr.) and Rodney Gorham; four grandchildren, Ma’Shanda Gorham-Jestadt (Lamine), Jerome Gregory (Rashid), Sydni Carey and Jakerah Carey; one great grandchild, Moise Jestadt; three bonus grandchildren, Rickeeta Gorham, Jabarii Smith and Olivia Smith; two sisters, Thelma Saunders and Victoria Cox; two brothers, Raymond Jones, Sr. (Sue) and Joseph Jones, Sr. (Sarah); three sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Tate, Juanita Byrd and Ella Mae Jones; one aunt, Alberta Byrd; three godchildren: Tyrell Tate, Angela Fortune and Antwan Smith; devoted friends: Lynn Maiden, Albert Henry, Pat Henry, Brian Nash, Sr., Dorothy Nash, Jerome Saunders, Sr., Crystal Saunders, Keith Nash, Emmett Cox,  Jr., Eddie Logan, Sr., and Raymond Smith; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
