Pastor Walker M. Wilson, Sr., former pastor of the Morning Star Baptist Church, Brown’s Store passed away on Sunday, December 3, in Richmond Virginia.
Walker McCoy Wilson, Sr. was born on April 13, 1941 in Westmoreland County, Virginia to the late Walker William Wilson and Mary McCoy Wilson.
On June 28, 1960, Pastor Wilson was united in holy matrimony to Doris Ball whom God blessed with sixty-three years and five children.
Pastor Wilson joined Zion Baptist Church Kinsale, VA under the leadership of Rev. Waverly Taylor, Sr. He was licensed (1982) and ordained (1984) to preach the gospel under the leadership of Rev. Frank E. Coleman, Jr.
Pastor Wilson was educated in the Westmoreland County Public School system and graduated from A. T. Johnson High School in June 1959. Pastor Wilson worked for Baird Construction Company for over 30 years. After retirement, he went back to work for 10 years at Barrick Company. In 2008, he received a degree in Bachelor of Church Ministry from The Sure Foundation Theological Institute.
Pastor Wilson’s love for God’s ministry was first expressed in singing. He sang with family members on the Zion Travelers in his earlier years. He later sang with the Soul Lifters and Sons of Faith. These groups traveled extensively and sang on programs with the Mighty Clouds of Joy, the Gospel Keynotes, Maggie Ingram and the Ingramettes, and many more from that era. There are three songs he sang that captured his life: Family Prayer, As Thy Will, and I Won’t Complain.
Pastor Wilson assumed pastorship at Morning Star Baptist Church, Heathsville, VA on September 13, 1987 where he served for 28 years. He loved preaching and teaching God’s word. His affinity for the youth led to a youth choir being formed as well as a gospel choir during his tenure. A special fellowship was created with New Mount Zion Baptist Church in Baltimore, Maryland.
Pastor Wilson’s eldest son, Walker McCoy Wilson, Jr. preceded him in death.
Pastor Wilson leaves to cherish his precious memories a devoted wife Doris Wilson; three sons, Kevin (Edith) of Bethlehem, PA; Patrick (Teresa) of Kinsale, VA, Casey (Veronica) of Center Cross, VA, a daughter, Shelley Johnson (Melvin) of Kinsale, VA; 15 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren; one sister, Shirley Clayton; one brother-in-law, Louis Ball; one sister-in-law Lillian McCoy; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends.
Celebration of Life Services will be held on Friday, December 15 at 12 Noon in the sanctuary of the Zion Baptist Church, 1274 Zion Church Road, Kinsale, Virginia.
Interment will follow in the Zion Baptist Church Cemetery.
Remains may be viewed on Thursday, December 14 from 5PM until 7PM at Zion Baptist Church and from 10AM until service time on Friday, December 15 at the church.
