Roger Jerome Nelson, affectionately known as “Sputnik”, was born in Fredericksburg, VA on February 23, 1958, to the late George E. Nelson Sr. and Elnora Lee Nelson. He peacefully entered into eternal rest at his home in Montross, VA on September 26, 2021.
Roger accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior and joined Siloam Baptist Church at an early age. He had rededicated his life to Christ and enjoyed going to church every Sunday, receiving the Message and praising the Lord. He kept the faith and kept on believing with a positive mind to the end, without complaining.
He attended Washington & Lee High School. After high school, he enrolled at Rappahannock Community College and took classes in heating, electrical, and air conditioning. He was also a very good carpenter and worked for Lee’s Home Improvement for 15 years, and other contractors. Sputnik was a Dallas Cowboy fan and enjoyed a variety of music.
He was preceded in death by his wife, the late Margaret Bennet Nelson; and his older brother, George Nelson Jr.
He leaves to cherish his loving memories two sons, Roger J. Baylor of Colonial Beach, VA and Jason Corbin (Shannon) of Coles Point, VA; daughter, Tasha Harris of Chesterfield, VA; four grandsons, Elijah Baylor of King George, VA, Kyle Baylor of Winchester, VA, Elijah Corbin, and M.
