Sammy L. Smith Obituary

Sammy L. Smith journeyed home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, February 5, 2025 at Chippenham Medical Center in Richmond, VA.

Sammy was born March 2, 1946 in Mississippi. He was raised in Florida where he joined the U.S. Army National Guard in 1964 and served until 1971. In Florida, Sammy worked at Clay Electric Co-op and Florida State Prison. He relocated from Florida to Tappahannock, Virginia in 1979. He worked at FDP Brakes Va. Inc. (formally known as Camco) for 35 years which is where he met his forever love and wife Margaret “Mickey” Smith.

Sammy was a quiet man and always did things on his time. He loved the outdoors and spent most of his time sitting outside by his garage, in his swing or working in his garden or yard when the weather permitted. He loved NASCAR racing and was a lifelong fan of Dale Earnhardt and Dale Earnhardt Jr. He also loved football and his favorite team was the Dallas Cowboys.

Sammy attended Jerusalem Baptist Church with his wife for years and officially became a member in May 2019. He loved the Lord and often tuned in to Jimmy Swaggart and John Hagee on television during the week and early Sunday mornings.

Sammy adored the love of his life, Mickey, throughout their 43 years of marriage. Sammy and Mickey married in 1981 and had been inseparable ever since. From that union he gained a daughter, Barbara, a devoted son in law, Wilton and two granddaughters, Keshia and Sheri. He loved his granddaughters immensely and there was nothing they asked that he wouldn’t do. Even if  it was as silly as turning his hat backwards or making a silly face to take a picture.

Sammy was preceded in death by his parents Paul and Ora Underhill and brother, Billy Smith. He leaves to cherish in his memory: his wife Margaret “Mickey” Smith; two sisters, Jane Moore of Green Cove Springs, FL and Kay Nichols of Oak Island, NC; one brother, Glen Smith(Vickie) of Keystone, FL; one daughter, Barbara Dixson (Wilton) of Hampton, VA; two sons, Richard Smith of Butler, FL and Stephen Smith of Starke, FL; two granddaughters, Keshia and Sheri Dixson of Hampton, VA; three sister in laws, Marie Dixon of Oldhams, VA, Annie Morris of Tappahannock, VA, and Gloria Parker of Oldhams, VA; two brother in laws, Julius “Shangy” Parker of Frankfurt, Germany and Robert “Bobby” Parker of Philadelphia, PA; nieces, Karen Thompson (Larry) of Hague, VA, Tiffany Ball (Michael) of Warsaw, VA, and Tierra Hickman of Richmond, VA; Renee, Angela, Stephanie, Sonya and nephews Ryan and Paul; a host of great nieces and nephews and cousins. He also leaves to cherish in his memory five special friends, James Baker, Garfield “Pop” Johnson, Maynard Harcum, Welford Burrell and Tyrone Burrell.
