Shakeya Sutton Obituary

Life Reflections

A Time To Be Born

Shakeya Monae Sutton was born on August 25, 1989 to Melanie Sutton and Larry Thompson in Washington, DC.  She was affectionally known as “Keya” to her family and friends.  Keya and her mom moved to Westmoreland County when she was a very young age, and this is where she lived most of her beautiful life.

A Time To Learn

Keya was educated in the Westmoreland County Public School system, where she was a member of FBLA, SODA, and James Farmer Scholars.  She was a member of the Washington & Lee Step Team and assisted with managing the Boys and Girls Basketball Teams.  Keya graduated high school and took pride in being a part of the class of 2007.  After high school she furthered her education and studied at Hampton University and Virginia Commonwealth University.

A Time To Be Saved

Shakeya accepted Christ at an early age and joined Jerusalem Baptist Church.  She later moved her membership to Salem Baptist Church.  Shakeya also served as a member of The Galilee Steppers Through Christ. In her adult years, she frequently attended the Transformation Coaching Academy.

A Time To Work

While in high school, Keya, got her first job working for Food Lion Grocery Store, Montross Virginia.  After her college years, she was employed with Eastern Virginia Bankshares (EVB), Tappahannock Virginia.  In October 2012, Keya, began her career with Capitol One, Richmond Virginia, as a Customer Service Representative in High Spend.  To form her own independence and to be closer to her job, Keya moved to Richmond Virginia in December 2018.  She excelled quickly at Capital One, holding multiple positions over the last 10 years.  She worked in Estates, Executive Resolutions, and the Digital Investigation Group, moving to Retail Bank in April 2021 with a position in Levies and Garnishments at the time of her passing.

A Time To Love

Keya was a beloved daughter, granddaughter, sister, niece, aunt, cousin, co-worker and devoted friend.  She had the most beautiful smile that could light up your soul.  The relationship she had with her mother was unbreakable and not like any other.  She idolized her father, and he could do no wrong in her eyes.  Keya loved them both so much.

She was fiercely loyal.  She loved to spend time with family and friends.  Whether it was attending celebrations, going out to eat, providing support during accomplishments, Keya was always there.  She was in her happy place whenever she was around her little cousins, drilling them about what was going on in their lives and laying down “Keya’s Famous Words of Wisdom”.  She would try this sometime with the adults of the family, too.  She had an undying love for her siblings, and her Grandparents were her heartbeats.  There was nothing she wouldn’t travel miles for or do when it came Oliver, Lucy, Henry and Ernestine.

She was a diehard Dallas Cowboy fan (credits to her PopPoP Oliver).  She enjoyed watching games with her family and taunting anyone who was not a believer in “Dem Boyz”.

Keya was a ride or die friend.  She loved hard and if you were a true friend of hers, you knew she always had your back.  She was that type of friend that defended you before you could defend yourself.  Her favorite past times were, having girls’ night out or girls’ night in, meeting up with high school friends, co-workers and cousins she grew up with.  Keya enjoyed loving up on all her friend’s babies.  She often talked about going to Colonial Beach Dragway and assisting her Dad with whatever he needed.  Anyone who was fortunate to know Keya, would describe her as being spunky, sassy with a little splash of bougee, and don’t forget, she was always camera ready.

Keya was preceded in death by her great grandmother, Sterling Thompson, whom she loved dearly, and her cousin, LaKesha “KeKe” Campbell, who she loved like a sister.  Their lives were Keya’s focus for wanting to keep her families always close and united.

A Time For Eternal Rest

Shakeya left this earthly world unexpectedly, on the morning of February 5, 2023, in Richmond Virginia.  This was a shock to all that loved and cared for her, but we can shed tears that she is gone, or we can smile because she has lived.  We choose to smile!

A Time To Celebrate

We will always remember Shakeya’s infectious smile, piercing green/grey eyes and her spirited personality.

Keya leaves to celebrate her life: parents, Melanie Pierce (Sterling, Jr.), Larry Thompson (Karen); grandparents, Oliver Sr. and Lucy Sutton, Henry and Ernestine Thompson; siblings, Trey Campbell (Lynbrina), Sharnika Campbell, Jamatha Campbell-Artis (Emmett, III), Kyndall Carey, Nathaniel Thompson; step-siblings, DeVonte Pierce, Nevaeh Pierce, Ashley Bland (Alonza), Kendra Jackson (Travis), Christopher; sister-in-love, Johnelle Campbell; play sister MéKayla Hackett, godparents, Lisa Veney, Floyd Myers; godchildren, Kariyah Burton, Noah Ball; nieces and nephews, Trey, Jr. Truth, Damarico, Damania, Zymari, Zaylen, Kiniya, Tristan, Kaisan, Shyla; aunts, Diane Thompson, Meshelle Sutton-Thompson, Monica Fauntleroy (Samuel, Jr.); uncle, Oliver Sutton, Jr.; special cousins, Brittany, Sam, III, Zierra, Zomari, Jaden; Keya’s Ride or Dies, Kesheira, Ralissa, Sharhea, Laquisha, Sherwaine, Shavontae, Brittany, Keaira, Ketra, Latoya.  A host of aunts, uncles, cousins as well as a multitude of friends
