Stevie R. Gray, Sr.

Stevie Ray Gray, Sr., beloved father, distinguished veteran, and devoted community leader, passed away on June 18, 2026, surrounded by loved ones.  His life marked by decades of faithful service to his country, community, and family, leaves an enduring legacy that will be cherished by all who knew him.  

Born June 7, 1953, to the late Walter C. Gray, Jr., and Elizabeth Ann Hall Gray, Stevie joined the Zion Baptist Church, Kinsale, VA., at an early age and served under the leadership of Rev. Waverly Taylor, Sr.  He was a faithful member of the church choir and The Boy Scouts of America.

Growing up in the Northern Neck, Stevie developed the discipline, determination, and character that would define his remarkable life.  He graduated from Washington & Lee High School in 1972, where, he distinguished himself as an exceptional basketball player.  He was later inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame for his athletic prowess.

Stevie attended Mitchell Community College in Statesville, North Carolina and Virginia State University in Petersburg, Virginia.  He served in the United States Army and the United States Air Force Reserves.  During his time in the Air Force Reserves, he was employed by the Government Printing Office in Washington, DC.  He retired from the Air Force Reserves as Chief Master Sergeant, the highest rank a non-commissioned officer can achieve.  He also worked for the Small Business Administration in Washington DC., retiring August 2015.

Stevie was given the prestigious honor of the 33rd Degree conferred by the Scottish Rite appendant body of Freemasonry.  He served in the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Virginia as Right Worshipful Grand Secretary of Virginia until his passing.  He was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.   Stevie was also an active member of the NAACP, and a Democratic Party Member.  

Stevie was a lifelong Washington Redskins Football Team supporter, a motorcycle guru, and a philanthropist for Higher Education for deserving students. He was known for his quiet demeanor, his beautiful smile, his smooth dance moves, and his unique and recognizable laughter.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his brothers Cecil and Jackie Gray.

Stevie leaves to cherish his memory; his loving mother Elizabeth (John) one son Stevie Jr. (Allyson); daughter Candice, three grandsons, Neo, Mace, and Odin; one granddaughter Corrie; four sisters, Callie, Leslie, Bonnie (Clinton), Winnie (Kevin); one brother Niexie; one sister-in-law Kathy; his second family, The Johnsons (Larry, Sharon, Marvin, Melvin); beloved companion, Mae Godette; a bonus son Trey (Kenya); a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, masonic brothers and military family.
 

Stevie was a loving son, brother, father, uncle, and friend.  His life motto was “Family First,” and he would go out of his way to help the people he loved in action or words of wisdom.  Stevie touched the hearts and souls of everyone who knew him and he will be dearly missed..
