Susie Martin Newman Obituary

Susie Martin Newman, affectionately known as “Lockie”, was born July 8, 1935, to the late Leslie and Agnes Martin.  She departed this earthly journey peacefully on May 15, 2021 at her residence.

Susie was educated in the public schools of King and Queen County.  She loved the Lord, and accepted Christ at an early age.  She was a member of Beulah Baptist Church, Minor, VA, where she attended faithfully until her health began to fail.  She was a devoted employee at Keller Industries, Virginia Friction, Quality Automotives, and H. Warshow and Sons, where she later retired.  To keep herself busy, she later went into healthcare as a personal care giver.  She worked with the Tullidge family for 11 years
before deciding to officially retire again.

Susie shall be remembered as a loving mother, wife, grandmother, sister, aunt and a true friend.  She loved her family and her community.  She had a big heart and the best smile that could brighten anyone’s day.  She was a dedicated member of the Family First organization.  She enjoyed attending church and supporting special services.  She loved family gatherings and spending time with loved ones.  One of her favorite pass times was playing bingo.  She loved getting her hair and nails done…even as her health was failing, she looked forward to those appointments.

In addition to her parents, Susie was preceded in death by her siblings, Elmer, Ernest, Harold, Edith, William, Percy, Agnes, Betty, Bennett and Marjorie.

Susie leaves to cherish her fond and loving memories, her husband of 36 years, Rhoderick Junior Newman; one daughter, Floralene D. Norman; two sons, James L. Norman and Ryland L. Norman; one step-daughter, Fae Newman. Eleven grandchildren, Yolanda (Herman), Rita, Patrick (Nicole), Nicole (Juan), Tonya, Jamaal (Laura), Tonita (Venturi), Monty, Lauren, Ryland, and Fashionate; thirty great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; four sisters-in-law, Leanna Martin, Betty Mae Smith, Edna Mae Kelly, and Ruth Tyler; one brother-in-law, Michael Newman (Vanessa); special friends, Delores Thompson, Jean Stewart, and Maggie Shelton; and a host of nieces, nephews and other loving relatives and friends who will all miss her dearly.

Special thanks to her caregivers: Doris, Rhonda (her “little daughter”), Bertha, Geraldine, Mary Lou, Sylvia, Irene, Gertrude, and her daughter, Floralene, who made sure she was able to be cared for in her home until the very end.  Special thanks to her grands, Mikeila, Kennedi, Kaleb, London and Xavier, who also helped care for her and kept her entertained.  They always wanted to make sure “Grandna” had company.
