Obituary

Terry Lee Newman was born on February 7, 1959, to the late Rosia Newman-Wilson and the late George William Burton in Goochland County, Virginia.  Terry grew up in Hague, VA where he was raised by his grandmother, Daisy (“Big Mama”) Burton, his father, and stepmother Laura (“Pipes”) Courtney-Hall.

Growing up, he was known to his family and friends as “Big Terry.”  He was called Big Terry because there were two Terrys in the family, Terry Lee Newman and Terry Lee Burton.  He became Big Terry because he was older and he was, of course, taller than Terry Burton who was given the nickname Little Terry.  They grew up like brothers.

Big Terry was educated in the Westmoreland County Public School system.  In 1980, he moved to Atlantic City, NJ where he stayed until his untimely death. He was known to his friends there as “Zeus.”  Big Terry also had practiced the Muslim faith and was known by his Muslum brotherhood as “Abdul Aziz.”  While in NJ, he worked as the manager of a clothing store, he worked at a couple of casinos and for many years at the Atlantic City Tram.

Growing up in his early years, Big Terry hung out with some of his family and friends spending time at Burton’s Corner playing pool, Pacman or just clowning around or getting into mischief.  Some of those family and friends were Terry Burton, Earl Burton, Larry Burton (deceased), W.A. Burton (deceased), James Page, Odell Jones, George Wilson (deceased) and Renwick Jones (deceased).

Some of Big Terry’s past time enjoyment in New Jersey was hanging out with friends at the casinos, but his past time passion was playing chess.  Big Terry always bragged about how good he was.  When he would talk to his sisters Connie or Bonnie on the phone and there was a dispute about something, he would say “checkmate” whenever he was right.

Big Terry was preceded in death by his father, George William Burton; his mother, Rosia Newman-Wilson; and his stepmother, Laura Courtney-Hall.  On his paternal side of the family, he was also preceded in death by his grandmother, Daisy Marie Burton, grandfather, George William Burton, Aunt Ruth Jackson, Aunt Estelle Clark, Uncle Lawrence Plummer, stepbrother, Lewis Hall, nephew Leroy Drummond, Jr., cousin James Clark, cousin Louise Thompson, cousin Wayne Clark, and cousin Winda Jackson. On his maternal side of the family, Terry was preceded in death by his grandmother Janie Newman, grandfather James Newman, Aunt Evelyn Newman-Robinson, Aunt and Uncle Pat and Florence Weldon, Uncles Tom and Sam Newman, and brothers Mark and Timothy Wilson.

Big Terry leaves to celebrate his life, his siblings, five sisters: Joan Drummond of Hague, VA, Connie Roy of Tappahannock, VA, Bonnie Martin (Rick) of Tappahannock, VA, Starline Green (Dwayne) of Florence, SC, Malinda Burns of Fredericksburg, VA; stepsisters, Eartha Harris of Woodbridge, VA and Jeraldine Hall of Dumfries, VA; three brothers, Joseph Newman of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, Gerald Newman (Debra) of Jay, New York, and Matthew Wilson of  Annapolis, MD, Aunts Violet Johnson and Ada Newman, Aunt and Uncle Jack and Joanne Newman, and Aunt and Uncle Jimmy and Roxanne Newman.

Big Terry also leaves to cherish his life, his girlfriend Terri Smith and a very good friend, Aldean DeGraffenreidt.
