The Life of…
Walter Elwood Dixon, affectionately known as “Shorty” or “Wobby” peacefully went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, April 30, 2024. He was born on May 13, 1944, to the late Fred Edward Dixon and Louise Virginia Wormley Dixon of Mt. Holly, Virginia.
Walter attended the Westmoreland County Public Schools, graduating from A.T. Johnson High School in June 1965. He accepted Christ and joined Salem Baptist Church at an early age.
On December 26, 1970, Walter united in Holy Matrimony to Avis Celestine Henderson, whom he affectionately called “Red.” To this long-standing blessed union of 53 years, three children were born.
The Laborer…
Walter was known for his strong work ethic and acts of kindness. He began working as a young boy and continued to labor until his health failed. Early in his career, Walter worked for Allen S. Yeatman, Montross, VA as a Truck Driver, served in the U. S. Army for two years prior to his discharge as an Honorable, SP/4. Thereafter, he began his employment at Potomac Supply Corporation, Kinsale, VA as a Truck Driver. For a short period, Walter worked at Newton Asphalt, Alexandra, VA and finally found his niche as an Electronics Technician at the Naval Surface Warfare Center, NSWC, Dahlgren, VA where he retired after 30 years of dedicated service.
Following retirement, Walter continued to work. He assisted his father with the family-owned farm business and served as a driver for his brother, Howard at Dixon’s Limousine Service, Warsaw, VA.
Of all his jobs, Walter loved his labor of love for trucking.
His Legacy… In His Childrens’ Hearts, An Outstanding “VIP”
“A Cheerful Heart is Good Medicine.” Proverbs 17:22
All who knew Walter will miss his compassion for others, willingness to serve, and witty sense of humor. He perfected the skill of love, laughter, and fellowship with family and friends.
A true sportsman, Walter loved drag racing and was a die-hard Dallas Cowboys fan. He also enjoyed working on cars, gardening, boating, and simply enjoying nature by sitting on his deck waving at every car that passed by. Walter also loved music and enjoyed playing the guitar at home. The family will surely miss his fondness of listening to the Gospel quartets: Lee Williams, Sensational Nightingales, Soul Stirrers, Mighty Clouds of Joy, Swanee Quintet, and The Canton Spirituals.
Walter is preceded in death by his parents, Fred & Louise Dixon, brothers: Howard E. Dixon, Sr., Fred A. Dixon (Frog), and Fred Gaskins.
Walter leaves to cherish his precious memories: a devoted wife, Avis Henderson Dixon of Montross, Virginia; four daughters: Beverly Gaskins, of Hyattsville, MD; Aletha Fauntleroy (George) of Waldorf, MD; Anissa Dixon (Kirk) of Waldorf, MD, and Tierra Selden (Wellington) of Aldie, VA; son-in-law, Bobby Fauntleroy of Waldorf, MD and his grandchildren: Bria Fauntleroy of White Plains, MD; Robert D.
